Senior Legal Counsel, Operations, Technology & Projects

    Job Purpose

    • You are the commercial architect behind Moniepoint’s most strategic deals. As our Senior Legal Counsel for Contracts, you ensure we move fast and innovate without compromising on security or compliance.
    • This role isn't just about "spotting risks"—it’s about finding creative, factual, and simple ways to help the business achieve its goals.
    • You will lead our approach to complex technology agreements, corporate finance, and M&A, ensuring that every contract we sign reflects our mastery and protects our mission to create financial happiness.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the Deal: Drive the drafting, negotiation, and execution of complex commercial agreements, from SaaS and licensing to payment partnerships.
    • Master the Details: Provide clear, jargon-free legal guidance on contractual risk and liability. You explain the "why" behind the "what."
    • Build for Scale: Create and maintain contract templates and playbooks that make our legal processes efficient and consistent across the globe.
    • Protect our IP: Advise on intellectual property, licensing structures, and data protection to ensure Moniepoint’s innovations stay ours.
    • Drive Growth: Lead legal support for corporate finance, including debt and equity financing, and manage the legal lifecycle of M&A and investment deals.
    • Partner with Experts: Collaborate with finance, strategy, and external advisors to ensure our transactions are executed with precision.
    • Operational Excellence: Monitor our contractual health, ensuring we meet our obligations and stay ahead of regulatory shifts.

What Success Looks Like (6–12 Months)

    • Efficient Playbooks: You’ve launched a suite of contract templates that have reduced negotiation time for our commercial teams.
    • Seamless M&A: You’ve successfully led the legal workstream for at least one major strategic transaction or financing round.
    • Trusted Partnership: Business leaders view you as a "growth enabler" rather than a "blocker," seeking your advice early in the deal-making process.
    • Risk Clarity: Our contractual risk profile is clearly documented, understood by the board, and managed proactively.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and a Qualifying Certificate from the Nigerian Law School.
    • 8 - 11 years of experience in commercial law, with a focus on technology and complex contract negotiations.
    • Demonstrated success in leading corporate finance and M&A transactions.
    • A deep understanding of the fintech or banking regulatory landscape.
    • Mastery in drafting documents that are clear, simple, and legally robust.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in a fast-growth scale-up or global fintech environment.
    • Proven ability to manage high-value transactions across multiple jurisdictions.

    About You:

    • You’re a Master of Context: You apply systems thinking to legal problems, balancing strict compliance with business reality.
    • You’re Relatable: You don’t hide behind "legalese." You speak the same language as our product and business teams.
    • You have Grit: You’re comfortable with the pressure of high-stakes deals and have the momentum to see them through to the finish line.
    • You’re Honest: You tell us the truth about risks, but you always bring a solution to the table.
    • You’re a Creator: You enjoy building better systems, not just following old ones.
