We are seeking to hire an experienced and commercially astute Senior Legal Counsel with a minimum of 6 years’ post-qualification experience. The successful candidate will serve as a key strategic partner to the Head of Legal and the wider business, providing high-quality legal and regulatory guidance across a broad range of matters.
This role requires a lawyer who can operate with significant autonomy, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and balance legal risk with business objectives. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in contract negotiation, regulatory advisory, and financial services law, alongside strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
What will you be doing?
Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of a wide range of legal documents—including complex commercial contracts, partnership agreements, internal policies, and regulatory documentation—ensuring alignment with applicable laws and business objectives.
Provide strategic legal advice on securities, payments, and broader financial services regulation across all operating markets, anticipating regulatory trends and advising on business impact.
Act as a trusted advisor to product, engineering, and business teams, delivering pragmatic, risk-based legal guidance on new products, features, and technological initiatives.
Lead market-entry and expansion initiatives, including regulatory analysis, structuring, entity setup,and management of licensing processes and regulator engagement.
Provide support on corporate governance and company secretarial matters, working closely with the Head of Legal to ensure compliance with statutory obligations and adherence to governance best practices.
Provide subject-matter expertise on data protection and privacy frameworks (e.g., NDPR, GDPR), and support the implementation and monitoring of compliance programs.
Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across the business, developing practical solutions that enable innovation while safeguarding the company.
Establish and optimize legal processes, contract management systems, and knowledge-sharing frameworks to improve efficiency and scalability.
Manage relationships with external counsel, regulators, and other key stakeholders, ensuring effective coordination and value delivery.
Mentor and support junior legal team members, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory developments globally, providing proactive, actionable insights to internal stakeholders.
Communicate complex legal and regulatory issues clearly to senior leadership and non-legal teams, supporting informed decision-making.
Who you are (Role Expectations)
Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B)
Admitted to the Nigerian Bar
Minimum of 6 years’ post-qualification experience, with a strong preference for candidates with both top-tier law firm and in-house (fintech or financial services) experience
Demonstrated expertise in commercial contracting, regulatory advisory, and corporate governance
Strong working knowledge of financial services regulation, including securities, payments, AML/CFT, and data privacy
Proven ability to manage complex legal matters independently and provide strategic, business-oriented advice
Excellent negotiation skills with a track record of handling high-value or complex transactions
Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex legal concepts
Ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
High level of professionalism, discretion, and integrity
