Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Silo Operator to oversee the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of grain silos and associated handling systems. The role involves ensuring efficient storage, quality preservation, and safe movement of grains using advanced control systems (HMI/SCADA). The ideal candidate will have hands-on technical knowledge, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining operational efficiency, product quality, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Silo Operations & Monitoring
- Operate and monitor the Silo Screen Operating System (HMI/SCADA).
- Track real-time silo conditions including grain level, temperature, and moisture content.
- Respond promptly to system alerts and alarms (e.g., high temperature, full silo, excessive moisture).
- Maintain accurate records of silo activities for reporting and audit purposes.
Grain Inflow (Filling Controls)
- Operate conveyor belts, bucket elevators, and augers to move grain into silos.
- Select and route incoming grain to the correct silo based on type and storage plan.
- Monitor filling status (tons filled, estimated completion time).
- Ensure safety interlocks are functional (preventing overloads, spillages, and blockages).
Grain Outflow (Discharge Controls)
- Manage silo discharge operations including opening/closing of gates and valves.
- Coordinate with the weighbridge to ensure accurate loading and dispatch.
- Monitor flow rates during discharge to trucks, packaging lines, or processing units.
Aeration & Drying Control
- Operate and schedule aeration fans to maintain safe storage conditions.
- Monitor and control grain drying units (temperature, airflow, moisture reduction).
- Initiate automatic or manual interventions if grain exceeds safe thresholds.
Maintenance & Safety
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on silo equipment.
- Report faults, wear, or malfunctions to the engineering/maintenance team.
- Enforce compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained around silo and handling areas.
Qualifications & Requirements
- OND / HND / Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Agricultural Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in silo operations, grain handling, or industrial plant operations.
- Knowledge of HMI/SCADA systems, sensors, and automated process controls.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of grain storage systems and controls.
- Good communication, teamwork, and record-keeping skills.
