    WASH Assistant

    Locations: Gwoza, MMC, and Jere, North East, Nigeria

    General Context of the Job/Project:

    The WASH assistant, under the direct supervision of the WASH officer, the incumbent will be required to work as a member of the WASH unit towards the improvement of hygiene promotion and community mobilisation activities effectiveness.

    Tasks and Responsibilities:

    1. Assist in promoting safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services among target communities in Gwoza, MMC, and Jere.
    2. Assist the community mobilizers to mobilise the communities to mitigate priority water and sanitation-related health risks, promoting the BCC strategy and keeping records of the community volunteers participating in Hygiene promotion activities.
    3. Participate in the HP campaign by conducting house-to-house visits focused on hygiene promotion and public health, focus groups, and mass campaigns using songs, IEC materials, etc., promoting Community Lead Total Sanitation (CLTS) and assisting the community mobilizers in the implementation of gathering events.
    4. Provide a weekly activity progress report to the WASH Officer, highlighting achievements versus targets.
    5. Any other duties as may be assigned by the WASH Officer;
    6. Comply with MCI policies and practices, ensuring protection mainstreaming, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities, and other relevant policies and procedures.
    7. Support the WASH officer for emergency response (WASH) across the field office.
    8. Assist in communicating effectively with the communities targeted, ensuring that hygiene and health messages are passed on with participatory interventions, allowing ownership and empowerment of the beneficiaries to influence their hygiene and health.
    9. Assist in selecting, training, and managing Community WASH Standing committees, such as Community Water Management Committee members, sanitation facilities caretakers, and volunteer hygiene promoter networks within the targeted beneficiaries.
    10. Performs any other duty as requested by the WASH OFFICER

    Essential Knowledge and Skills:

    1. First Degree in Engineering, Geology, Geography, or other WASH-related fields from a recognised/accredited Tertiary Institution in Nigeria
    2. At least 1-2 years post-NYSC relevant experience
    3. Good interpersonal skills
    4. Ability to work within a team setting
    5. Independence, adaptability, and flexibility with good workload management, multitasking, and the ability to meet tight deadlines
    6. Excellent communication skills
    7. Previous experience with other local and international NGOs
    8. Experience in Nutrition and community-based programs
    9. Community mobilisation and advocacy experience
    10. Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)

    Preferred Experience:

    1. Previous experience working on WASH projects in conflict-affected or displacement settings.
    2. Familiarity with humanitarian principles, standards, and guidelines for WASH programming.
    3. Experience working with vulnerable populations and communities, with sensitivity to cultural and gender considerations.
