    Veterinarian 3 (Flying Livestock Field Officer)-National Position

    Under the Supervision of the Livestock Specialist, the Flying Livestock Field Officer (FLFO) ensures professional supervision of all livestock related interventions in Nigeria, particularly in Non-International Armed Conflict (NIAC) states including Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY). She/He shall as well, be equally important to focus on addressing the livestock challenges in Other Situation of Violence (OSV), especially, the ICRC priority areas affected by clashes in the country between different livelihood communities including areas of farmers/herders’ clashes.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Contribute to the formulation of the ICRC livestock strategy in Nigeria and intervention guidelines.

    • Liaising with federal FMARD as well as state level and Economic Security (EcoSec) team, to plan, design and supervise the trainings for the Ministry’s technical staff and where required the livestock keeping community

    • Provide relevant support in assessing, identifying, designing and implementing vaccination campaigns coupled with treatments, value chain and structural support in different geographical areas in collaboration with the ICRC respective head of structure and FMARD including the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) based on sustainable approach.

    • Advice and support the livestock and other EcoSec field teams with the implementation of livestock based small scale livelihood support projects.

    • Train and coach the field EcoSec team on the livestock approach and related activities.

    • Ensure appropriate and timely internal technical reporting to the Livestock Specialist and EcoSec Coordinator.

    • In close collaboration with the ICRC field teams, coordinate and implement livestock program with relevant local authorities and actors in respective states.

    • Coordinate and implement at the national and state level livestock activities with relevant authorities and actors such as Federal/State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), FAO, ECOWAS and other livestock implementing agents.

    • Understand and timely contribute on control measures of transboundary animal diseases relating to both neighbouring and regional ECOWAS countries.

    • She/He supervises all teams implementing livestock activities in the field in effective and timely manner.

    • Run the ongoing livestock program together with specialized field officers.

    • Ensures Accountability for Affected Population (AAP) couple with “Do No Harm” guidelines and feedback mechanism set in place for all livestock activities.

    • Understand the farmers-herders clashes and significantly contribute to its implication in the household economy for both livelihood groups.

    • Contribute to the broader livestock programme and strengthen national and regional networking for pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities.

    • Understand and contribute to the concept of “One Health” and “Climate Change” on the ICRC supported livestock programme in Nigeria.

    Education and Experience Required

    • University degree in Veterinary Medicine/science, Animal Health or Animal science

    • Advanced Studies in Public health, epidemiology or project management will be an added value.

    • 5 years’ working experience with pastoral communities of which at least 3 years in humanitarian organization

    Desired profile and Skills

    • Good understanding of pastoral dynamics.

    • Good analytical and organizational skills.

    • Energetic and able to conduct extensive field visits.

    • Good command of written and spoken English (Knowledge of Hausa/Fulani language is an added advantage).
