    Primary Class Teacher

    JOB PURPOSE

    Ensuring that all primary school pupils attain to their potential through the effective delivery of a high-quality programme of teaching and learning from Year 1 to Year 6.

     

    OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

    This job description should be read in conjunction with the teacher’s contract. The teachers are the essence of the work of the school. Each teacher is responsible for the education of the students in his/her class(es). In addition, it is the role of each teacher to be sure that all students are safe, secure and properly supervised at all times.

     

    RELATIONSHIPS

    • The Primary School Teacher is selected by the Director of Schools in consultation with the Head of School, and Coordinator of Schools.
    • The Primary School Teacher will report directly to the Primary School Coordinator, however, in the absence of a Primary School Coordinator he/she will report to the Coordinator of Schools or the Headmaster/Headmistress who will also provide strategic leadership and day to day oversight of the Primary School Teacher.

    OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

    Teaching

    • Plan work in accordance with the National Curriculum for England and Wales schemes of work and programmes of study.
    • Identify clear learning objectives and specify how they will be taught and assessed.
    • Take account of students’ prior levels of attainment and use them to set targets for future improvements.
    • Provide clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge.
    • Ensure coverage of the National Curriculum for England and Wales
    • Set appropriate and demanding expectations for students’ learning behaviour and presentation of work.
    • Maintain good discipline by adherence to the advice given to staff in the staff handbook and elsewhere.
    • Set work for students absent from school for health or disciplinary reasons.
    • Facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with students
    • Keeping learning resources well organised and create a positive learning environment in the classroom
    • Develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children according to age, ability and aptitude
    • Evaluate own teaching to improve its effectiveness.
    • Access and record progress and prepare pupils for national tests
    • Teach all areas of the primary curriculum
    • Take responsibility for the progress of a class of primary-age pupils
    • Plan, prepare and present lessons that cater for the needs of the whole ability range within the class
    • Motivate pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation
    • Prepare and mark work to facilitate positive pupil development
    • Meet requirements for the assessment and recording of pupils' development
    • Provide feedback to parents and carers on a student's progress at parent-teacher conferences and other meetings
    • Support the ideals and policies of the school and to implement the school’s philosophy and objectives
    • Assume responsibility for the education of the students in his/her class(es)
    • Develop the content of the lessons in relation to the school’s philosophy and objectives.
    • Assist in ensuring the safety of all children in the school and intervene if conflict should arise between any students
    • Teach the classes assigned by the Headmaster/Headmistress
    • Undertake other duties assigned by the Headmaster/Headmistress or the Deputy Headmaster/Deputy Headmistress
    • Be informed about the aims and curriculum of the area in which he/she teaches
    • In light of these aims and curricula, to select the lesson content and activities which are appropriate to the needs of each student in his/her class(es), in relation to the school’s philosophy and objectives.
    • Mark regularly and promptly all assignments completed by students
    • Ensure appropriate behaviour of students in class and around the school.
    • Care for the classroom(s) in which he/she teaches. To ensure that the room(s) is/are attractively decorated and conducive to learning.

    Assessment, Recording and Reporting

    • Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use outcomes to adapt teaching accordingly;
    • Provide quality marking and feedback and identify clear targets for future learning as appropriate
    • Carry out assessment cycles (e.g., collection of effort and attainment assessments, reports) as agreed by the school.
    • Be familiar with the Code of Practice for identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs and keep appropriate records on Individual Education Plans for students.

    Pastoral Work

    • Attend assemblies and actively assist in the supervision of students
    • Monitor (and set targets for) the social and academic progress of individuals in the class.
    • Promote good attendance and monitor in accordance with the School’s attendance policy.
    • Be available for all parent-teacher conferences.
    • Attend all relevant meetings, including planning meetings.

    Professional Standards

    • Support the aims of the academy to promote a “learning community”
    • Treat all colleagues and students with respect and consideration
    • Treat all students fairly, consistently and without prejudice.
    • Set a good example to students in terms of appropriate dress, standards of punctuality and attendance.
    • Promote the aims of the School by attendance at and participation in events
    • Support the ethos of the School by upholding the behaviour policy etc.
    • Take responsibility for own professional development and participate in staff training when provided.
    • Be familiar with new developments and methods in the teaching of his/her field.
    • Reflect on own practice as well as the practices of the School with the aim of improving all that we do.
    • Participate in the management of the School by effective participation in various team and staff meetings.
    • Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably be assigned by the Headmaster or Headmistress.
    • Undertake duties as prescribed within the Schools’ policies
    • Be proactive and take responsibility for matters relating to health and safety.
    • Work with others to plan and coordinate work
    • Keep up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum.

    OTHER

    • Maintain diplomacy, poise, and professionalism under pressure.
    • Demonstrate an excellent level of cultural acceptance and inclusion
    • Have a superior understanding of Student Code of Conduct, Student Handbook, Parents Communication Policy.
    • Must be fair and equitable.

    REVIEW

    • This job description will be reviewed at least once per year and may be subject to amendment or modification at any time after consultation with the post holder. It is not a comprehensive statement of procedures and tasks but sets out the main expectations of the establishment in relation to the post holder's professional responsibilities, duties and grading.

    QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Education from a reputable institution or any related discipline with a Teaching certificate if educational background is not in the field of Education.
    • Profession certification in Education such as PGDE, CACHE, NVQ etc.
    • MSc or MBA or professional certificates in Education or any related discipline will be an added advantage.
    • Experience: Minimum 3 years relevant experience
