    Medical Laboratory Scientist

    The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for conducting laboratory tests and analyses that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. The role involves operating laboratory equipment, analyzing specimens, ensuring quality control, and maintaining compliance with professional and regulatory standards to support effective patient care.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Collect, process, analyze, and interpret laboratory specimens including blood, urine, stool, and other body fluids.
    • Perform laboratory investigations in areas such as Hematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Immunology, and Blood Transfusion Science.
    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
    • Ensure accurate documentation and timely reporting of laboratory test results.
    • Maintain strict quality control and quality assurance procedures in all laboratory operations.
    • Observe and comply with laboratory safety standards, infection prevention, and waste disposal protocols.
    • Verify and validate test results before release to clinicians or authorized personnel.
    • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.
    • Monitor laboratory inventory and report shortages of reagents, consumables, and supplies.
    • Participate in internal and external quality assessment programs.
    • Ensure proper handling, storage, and preservation of laboratory specimens and reagents.
    • Collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support patient management.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
    • Participate in staff training, continuous professional development, and departmental meetings.
    • Perform other laboratory-related duties as assigned by management.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
    • Valid practicing license from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
    • Minimum of 1–3 years post-qualification experience in a hospital laboratory setting is an added advantage.
    • Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and safety standards.
    • Proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment and computer systems.
    • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
