    Instrumentation & Controls Lead

    Job Purpose/Objectives

    • Instrumentation & Controls Lead is responsible for maintaining all the instrumentation and controls equipment/devices safely and efficiently across all the field locations, for continuous plant availability and effective oil/gas delivery to customers.

     

    Job & Main Specifications (Education/Knowledge, Skills, Attributes, Experience & Other Required Details)

    • A University degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Instrumentation & Automation Engineering.
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in oil refining, petrochemical, or gas processing industry, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
    • Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various instrumentation systems, equipment, and components.
    • Strong working knowledge of Fire & Gas systems, PLC, DCS, and SCADA platforms.
    • Excellent critical and analytical thinking abilities.
    • Effective time management and communication skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Capable of multitasking and working independently with minimal supervision.
    • Fully conversant with Permit to Work (PTW) systems.
    • Familiar with work order system processes.
    • Able to remain calm and focused under pressure and in emergency situations.
    • Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities.
    • Conversant with the use and application of HART Communicator to access field instruments for calibration.
    • Highly proficient in diagnosing and resolving complex instrumentation and control issues.
      • Comprehensive understanding of instrumentation documentation in oil/gas production and processing facilities, including:
      • P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation diagrams, Process Flow Sheets).
      • Cause and Effect Charts.
      • Instrumentation drawings and documentation.
      • Piping Isometric Drawings.
      • Process Flow Diagrams.
      • Loop Diagrams.
      • Incident Reporting Procedures.
      • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
    • Experienced with Allen Bradley PLCs, Rockwell ViewLogic, Daniel Ultrasonic Flow Meters, Gas Chromatographs, and related instrumentation technologies.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Perform fault-finding on instrumentation and controls distribution systems using relevant drawings, procedures, codes, and safety regulations to quickly rectify faults, ensuring equipment availability and asset integrity.
    • Ensure all instrumentation and control equipment operate within design limits to meet the technical integrity targets of the oil/gas processing facility.
    • Develop and maintain a database of all instrument-related safety-critical equipment, ensuring timely periodic maintenance in line with statutory requirements.
    • Collaborate with the Senior E&I Engineer to identify bad actors in the plant and develop preventive maintenance schedules for execution via CMMS (SAP).
    • Provide lead supervision and training to assigned staff on tasks including installation, repair, troubleshooting, planning, modification, design, and calibration of instrumentation.
    • Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate field devices such as transmitters, Daniel Orifice Meters, ultrasonic meters, PSVs, flare meters, Coriolis meters, turbine meters, differential meters, control valves, fire and gas detectors, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, PLCs, DCS, SCADA, moisture analyzers, gas chromatographs, VFDs, and telecommunications equipment.
    • Support the development of the annual budget for instrumentation devices and consumables by analyzing failure patterns and repair activities.
    • Oversee and conduct on-the-job training (OJT) for staff on the operation and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems including PLCs, VFDs, RTUs, SCADA systems, and software-controlled units.
    • Prioritize, plan, and manage projects and workloads; coordinate with internal and external stakeholders; delegate tasks and assess future needs.
    • Conduct routine inspections of safety-critical instrumentation equipment, rectify issues, and maintain maintenance records in compliance with statutory requirements.
    • Verify the accuracy and quality of work performed by assigned staff, ensuring adherence to standards, specifications, and safety regulations; assist in hiring and performance evaluations.
    • Lead safety training sessions and enforce safe work practices across all locations to protect personnel and equipment.
    • Collaborate with engineering teams and third-party contractors on plant modifications and upgrades, ensuring alignment with approved scopes and industry best practices.
    • Initiate cost-reduction strategies for maintenance without compromising quality standards.
    • Provide technical input on instrumentation and control systems from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, installation, and commissioning.
    • Promote reliability engineering principles and best practices across field locations.
    • Lead and participate in HSE and technical audits, design reviews, technical studies, HAZOPs, FATs, and third-party inspections.
    • Operate programmers, calibrators, measuring/testing devices, hand tools, and trade-specific equipment.
    • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures to eliminate recurring issues.
    • Develop scopes of work for third-party instrumentation tasks, participate in technical bid evaluations, and oversee execution in line with approved scopes and standards.
    • Manage the use, care, and operation of process control instrumentation and related equipment; recommend and implement improvements in procedures and systems.
    • Prepare and submit reports and records of preventive maintenance and repair activities to the Supervisor.
    • Coordinate daily activities of the Instrumentation team and report to the Maintenance Supervisor.
    • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager.
