    Chief of Legal Affairs/Senior Counsel

    SUMMARY OF POSITION:

    The Chief of Legal Affairs/Senior Counsel will oversee the legal department's operations and provides strategic leadership in managing legal matters affecting the university. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief of Legal Affairs plays a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and institutional policies while safeguarding the University's interests. The incumbent will serve as the principal legal advisor to the University administration, providing expert guidance on legal matters and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations in accordance with the policies and procedures of the American University of Nigeria.

    DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide legal advice and counsel to the university administration on a wide range of issues, including contracts, labor and employment law, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
    • Review and draft contracts, agreements, policies, and other legal documents to protect the university's interests and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
    • Conduct legal research and analysis to stay abreast of changes in the law and advise the university on potential legal implications.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
    • Monitor regulatory developments and advise the university on compliance requirements and best practices.
    • Coordinate with university departments to conduct compliance audits and investigations as needed.
    • Manage and oversee litigation matters involving the university, including working with external legal counsel to represent the university's interests in legal proceedings.
    • Develop strategies for minimizing legal risks and resolving disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner.
    • Identify legal risks and potential liabilities facing the university and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
    • Advise university leadership on risk management strategies and assist in the development of risk management policies and procedures.
    • Collaborate with university departments and stakeholders to ensure legal compliance and promote a culture of ethics and integrity.
    • Provide training and educational programs to university staff on legal issues and compliance requirements.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by the supervisor.

    Requirements for the Position:

    • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognized tertiary institution.
    • Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree preferred.
    • Fifteen (15) years of post-call to bar experience, with a proven track record of providing legal counsel and leadership in an academic institution or similar complex organization.
    • Admission to the Nigerian Bar Association and in good standing.
    • Strong knowledge of Nigerian and international laws and regulations applicable to higher education institutions.
    • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and build effective relationships.
    • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion.

    Other Requirements & Abilities for the Position:

    • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to provide strategic legal advice and risk assessment to senior management.
    • Ability to stay updated on changes in relevant laws and regulations and effectively communicate implications to university leadership.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
    • Commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality.
    • Experience in working collaboratively with external legal counsel when necessary.
    • Willingness to contribute to the overall mission and goals of the American University of Nigeria.
