    Research and Campaigns Assistant

    The Research and Campaigns Assistant will assist the Programmes Manager – Amnesty International Nigeria in the development and implementation of research and campaigning strategies in the Nigeria team, including by monitoring developments, participating in carrying out research and investigations; writing reports, briefings, analyses, press releases, and advocacy materials.

    ABOUT YOU

    The suitable candidate must have the ability to exercise high standards of servicing to a range of stakeholders (internal to the National Office and the Amnesty movement, media, governments, NGOs and beneficiaries of Amnesty International's work, amongst others). Must understand the work of the Programmes Manager – Amnesty International Nigeria to enable her/him to offer Research and Campaigns support to Amnesty International Nigeria staff.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Monitor and maintain a broad overview of relevant political and human rights developments;
    • Assist with research and investigations on the human rights situation in Nigeria or thematic areas;
    • Participate in the planning, organization, and coordination of field research and other relevant AI missions and travel and campaign activities; including interviewing, taking notes, writing reports and briefings, preparing budgets, providing logistical support and solving problems;
    • Support the development and maintenance of effective contacts, networks and partners;
    • Assist the Nigeria teams' research, campaigning, communication and growth activities by gathering and managing human rights-related information, by liaising with national and local contacts, media monitoring, internet searches and manual and electronic filing in relevant databases;
    • Assist in planning, management and administrative meetings, seminars and workshops;
    • Assist with processing incoming inquiries, petitions and follow-up with correspondence.;
    • Manage files, records and other information retrieval systems where necessary within the organization's self-servicing guidelines;
    • Contribute to the development of programme-wide strategies and plans for research, campaigning, youth activism and growth and provide input into internal discussions on the AI mission, policy and organizational issues in order to increase the effectiveness of AI's work;
    • Contribute to the team's response during a crisis or unexpected work;
    • Interview, assist with the selection of, induct, and supervise volunteers working in the team.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • A Bachelor's degree in social sciences, international relations, law or related disciplines;
    • At least 3 years' work experience;
    • Demonstrated commitment to human rights, e.g. through previous work, membership of an organization, involvement in advocacy of human rights, etc;
    • Experience in the non-profit/NGO sector, campaigning, is desirable;
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to draft and proof-read research, communication and campaign materials tailored to the appropriate audience including through digital channels;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; other relevant local languages or additional foreign languages desirable;
    • Ability to work under pressure, manage conflicting demands, multitask and work to deadlines to achieve results;
    • Ability to deal in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including survivors of human rights violations and others who may be distressed;
    • Able to work in a manner that is consistent with the organisation's core behaviours and competencies.

    No of weekly working hours:40

    Research and Campaigns Intern

    To assist in monitoring human rights developments; supporting campaigns and growth activities; and carrying out research in various areas of focus including but not limited to arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, unlawful killings, women's rights, media freedom, civic space, freedom of expression, forced evictions, torture and cruel inhuman and degrading treatment, discrimination, and access to justice. This is an internship position for the duration of 6 months.

    ABOUT YOU

    The suitable candidate must have the ability to exercise high standards of servicing to a range of stakeholders (internal to the National Office and the Amnesty movement, media, governments, NGOs and beneficiaries of Amnesty International's work, amongst others). Must understand the work of the Programmes Manager – Amnesty International Nigeria to enable her/him to offer executive support to Amnesty International Nigeria staff.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assist with research and investigations on the human rights situation in Nigeria.
    • Monitor human rights developments including decisions by national, regional and international human rights bodies.
    • Support in the development, organisation and implementation of campaigning, communication, human rights education, and growth activities by searching for and collating relevant information, developing short notes or briefings and documenting materials in a systematic manner for easy retrieval.
    • Assist in planning of meetings, seminars, workshops, compiling lists and logistical support as necessary.
    • Support with processing incoming inquiries, petitions, and letters, and other administrative tasks.
    • Draft letters, reports, blog posts, articles and informative pieces for internal and external audiences.

    SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE:

    • A bachelor's degree or higher national diploma (HND) in a relevant field or relevant professional qualifications.
    • Degrees in social sciences or international relations, law would be an advantage;
    • A master's degree is a plus;
    • Demonstrated interest in human rights, e.g. through previous work, membership of an organization, involvement in advocacy of human rights, etc;
    • Good interpersonal skills, a helpful and personable attitude;
    • Good oral and written communication skills in English; other relevant local languages or additional foreign languages desirable;
    • Ability to work under pressure, manage conflicting demands, multitask and work to deadlines to achieve results
    • Good working knowledge of standard Office software e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook;
    • Good understanding and use of social media e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and multimedia tools like Canva is a plus.

    Digital and Communications Assistant

    The Digital and Communications Assistant will work with the Amnesty International Nigeria Media Manager to support the development and implementation of communication strategies, media plans, social media and digital engagements by shaping and developing the brand and profile of Amnesty International Nigeria while engaging with a variety of audiences and stakeholders.

    ABOUT YOU

    The suitable candidate must have the ability to exercise high standards of servicing to a range of stakeholders (internal to the National Office and the Amnesty movement, media, governments, NGOs and beneficiaries of Amnesty International's work, amongst others). Must understand the work of the Media Manager to enable her/him to offer media support to the Amnesty International Nigeria office and to stakeholders.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work with the media manager to develop and implement media plans and activities.
    • Provide support to media aspect of campaigns and human rights projects including creating calendar for the implementation of media actions and commemorative dates.
    • Contribute to the human rights messaging and communications plans of the organisation, enhancing the online presence and overall image and awareness in order to advance organisation's goals and mission.
    • Integrate gender and youth perspectives in AI's communication and media outputs.
    • Manage and generate content for social media platforms e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram
    • Support the team with developing, storing and curating photographs, audio-visual materials including videos, podcasts for reports, media engagement, storytelling, external communications and branding.
    • Assist with the analysis and collection of analytical data for websites and social media to provide analytical insights to trends, audience behaviour in order to increase engagement and drive growth.
    • Prepare and design newsletters and ensure content are checked by respective teams and that they meet the organizational standards.
    • Provide website assistance: routinely updating website content and photos.
    • Other communications support as needed, including administrative assistance.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • A degree or higher national diploma in a relevant discipline e.g. mass communication, IT, arts, social sciences or equivalent professional qualification and experience
    • At least 2 years' experience working in similar role;
    • Strong commitment to and knowledge of human rights;
    • Good familiarity with monitoring and developing social media content (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram etc);
    • Good working knowledge of standard Office software e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook;
    • Experience working with websites, WordPress is desirable;
    • Experience working with graphic design tools and software e.g. Canva, Photoshop, is an advantage;
    • Experience developing material for a variety of audiences, together with an understanding of the importance of tailoring materials for various target audiences including through digital channels;
