PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
BBC World Service is evolving its editorial team in Abuja while future-proofing its journalism to meet changing media consumption habits across sub-Saharan Africa.
BBC Hausa is one of the most trusted international news providers for audiences across West Africa and a highly engaged global diaspora. With a strong editorial heritage, the service is entering an exciting new phase: transforming into a digital-first, video-led operation designed to reach a new generation of Hausa audiences who primarily consume news via smartphones, YouTube, and social media.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
This video producer/journalist role is central to that transformation. The successful candidate will help build BBC Hausa’s video and visual storytelling capability, contributing to filming, editing, scripting, presenting, and end-to-end content production.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Proven experience creating and delivering high impact digital journalism, with a strong understanding of audience engagement, growth and content performance across multiple platforms.
- Excellent news judgement, with the ability to identify compelling angles, simplify complex stories and shape content for digital and mobile first audiences.
- Strong multimedia production skills, including scripting, producing and editing video, audio and social content from concept through to publication.
- Deep understanding of Hausa speaking audiences, with the ability to create culturally relevant and engaging content for audiences across the region and diaspora.
- Experience using audience insights, analytics and emerging technologies, including AI supported workflows, to optimise content while maintaining strong editorial standards.
- Outstanding writing, editing and communication skills in Hausa and English, with meticulous attention to accuracy, impartiality and editorial integrity.
- A collaborative and adaptable team player who thrives in fast paced news environments, manages competing priorities effectively and builds positive working relationships across teams and stakeholders.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Proven experience creating high performing content across social platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X and TikTok, with a strong understanding of audience engagement and growth strategies.
- Strong video production and editing skills, with experience creating compelling short, mid and long form content using tools such as Final Cut Pro and QEdit.
- Ability to use audience analytics and performance data to optimise content, refine editorial approaches and maximise reach and impact.
- Excellent storytelling, scripting and presentation skills, with the ability to create engaging digital video and visualised audio content for younger audiences.
- Deep understanding of youth audiences and digital consumption habits, adapting formats, tone and storytelling techniques to maximise relevance and engagement.
- Experience using AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance research, content creation, editing and production workflows while maintaining high editorial standards.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams while combining sound editorial judgement with excellent digital production expertise.

We are seeking highly accomplished presenters to front a range of visualised podcast programmes primarily for YouTube as well as video content for a range of digital platforms. The presenter plays a central role in maintaining the service’s reputation for high-quality journalism and compelling storytelling, while serving as a prominent voice in African media.
This role is not limited to reading scripts or ad-libbing content. It requires active involvement across the entire content lifecycle, combining presentation with digital video production. The role includes pitching original story ideas, shaping editorial direction, and leading or supporting production processes from concept through to final delivery.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Present high quality visualised podcasts and live programmes, delivering news, interviews and features with authority, clarity and engaging storytelling.
- Research, develop and conduct exclusive interviews with politicians, experts and influential voices across Africa, providing insightful analysis and making complex issues accessible to audiences.
- Play an active role in content production from concept to delivery, working closely with editorial teams to shape programme output and ensure relevance, accuracy and audience appeal.
- Drive audience engagement through live interaction, social media activity and community building, creating meaningful connections across digital platforms.
- Contribute to the growth and promotion of content across YouTube, social media and emerging platforms, identifying trends and opportunities to expand and retain audiences.
- Embrace innovation by using AI tools, new technologies and creative formats to enhance storytelling, production efficiency and audience participation.
- Build strong relationships across the BBC and externally, representing BBC Hausa at events, maintaining diverse contacts and championing collaboration, inclusion and audience-focused output.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Recognised and trusted journalist with a strong profile in Africa and a proven reputation for credibility, integrity and high editorial standards.
- Fluent in English and Hausa, with excellent presentation, communication and writing skills, and the ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences.
- Proven track record of securing and conducting high profile, agenda-setting interviews with political, business, entertainment and sporting figures across West Africa.
- Significant experience in broadcast journalism, including live presentation, visualised podcasts and digital video content, with the ability to attract and engage large online audiences.
- Strong interviewing, research and analytical skills, with the ability to uncover insights, interpret complex information and translate it into compelling content.
- Deep understanding of the political, cultural and social landscape of West Africa, with sensitivity to diverse perspectives and audiences.
- Sound editorial judgement with experience managing legal, compliance and editorial policy considerations in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
