    Study Abroad Officer

    The Study Abroad Officer is charged with the responsibility of assisting the Director; Career Services and Study Abroad Program in promoting the mission, programs and goals of the American University of Nigeria with other Colleges and Universities around the world.  This will include but NOT limited to the possibility of both AUN students going to those other colleges and universities as well as other students coming to AUN to study for a semester or year.  The desire is to increase knowledge of the American University of Nigeria both here in Yola and to promote that public awareness internationally through participation in educational programs, and to create and maintain goodwill in the communities it serves, especially in greater Yola and Jimeta and Nigeria and the surrounding countries. 

    DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Facilitate a constructive relationship between students and host country communities, institutions and individuals involved with the program;
    • Maintain regular communication with the Study Abroad Offices in participating universities and submits detailed, timely reports, as required.
    • Work with students, and faculty to enhance and develop study abroad opportunities at A.U.N; -
    • Evaluate and monitor current and new programs;
    • Assist in planning, developing and coordinating study abroad programs at A.U.N. Administers assigned study abroad programs, advises students regarding study options, and assists the operations of the Office of Study Abroad.
    • Liaise with the supervisor to arrange for course and faculty approval for A.U.N. programs abroad.
    • Assist in administering assigned programs including: manages the recruitment of students, manages the evaluation and selection of students, interacts with other departments of the university to coordinate programs, conducts orientation of programs for general management, implementation, and academic delivery of the study abroad in A.U.N.
    • Advise students regarding study abroad programs including the integration of study abroad into academic plans, recommendations of programs, assistance in the application process, and answers queries of students, parents, faculty, and departments.
    • Maintain a current and relevant academic program, in association with local institutions, faculty and professionals;
    • Establish clear student learning outcomes and designs program elements to meet these objectives;
    • Organise and delivers the students' initial cross-cultural orientation and weekly debriefs sessions;
    • Oversee the organisation of educational visits and field trips and integrating the learning from these, into the traditional coursework components of the program;
    • Support overall student learning by guiding and advising students in both their cross-cultural learning processes and academic experiences - thus serving as an educator/teacher in the broadest sense by assisting students to draw substantive connections from different aspects of the experience;
    • Conduct the program review and academic evaluation at the end of the program and prepare a rigorous written evaluation for each student's transcript, clarifies both what the student achieved and how it was achieved; students, and may conduct on-site visits to programs.
    • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

    Requirements for the position:

    • A good bachelor’s degree from a reputable tertiary institution.
    • Three to Five years of experience in Study Abroad Programs in a foreign country or a combination of a foreign country and a national post.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of academic program planning, development, and implementation
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni from multiple campuses and from many countries.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time (some event planning experience would be a plus)
    • Perform responsibilities with a minimum of supervision, work well as part of a team, and who is a good listener
    • Resourceful; good sense of humour; flexible work hours

    Career Services Officer

    The Career Services Officer is charged with the responsibility of assisting the Director of Career Services and Study Abroad Program in career counselling and referrals for current, prospective students and recent alumni, while being courteous and helpful to those who use the career center. She/he shall work closely with students, alumni, recruiters, faculty and staff as well as members of the University community in ensuring a result oriented career services center in line with established policies and procedures of the American University of Nigeria.

    DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ensure that resources, the desk area, and the office are easy to use and in proper order.
    • Assist with Career Services events and programs.
    • Attend and participate in continued training.
    • Provide students and faculty with information regarding job openings, internships and event notifications.
    • Assist in development and distribution of promotional materials, and career tools including but not limited to fliers, social media, newsletters, and general email.
    • Assist in tracking job openings
    • Conduct research for student resources containing relevant career, job, and internship information.
    • Coordinate and complete special projects assigned/requested based on individual’s interests and skills
    • Develop and maintain the career office website and social networks
    • Assist Career Services staff in coordination and execution of special events and programs such as job fairs, employer information sessions, and on-campus interviews and resume walk-in hours.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by supervisor

    Requirements for the position:

    • A good bachelors’ degree from a recognized tertiary institution with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with college students or young adults in an academic or career services counseling capacity.
    • Sound understanding of academic advising and student development theory, and success in working collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and students
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
    • Flexibility on time/office hours is very key to this position
