    Data Scientist, Risk

    The Role

    • Flutterwave is seeking a highly analytical and technically driven Data Scientist to join our dynamic Risk team. As a fintech company operating in a rapidly evolving landscape, detecting anomalies and mitigating risk at scale is paramount to our success.
    • In this role, you will contribute to the transition of our risk capabilities from reactive analytics to proactive predictive modeling. You will be responsible for designing, training, and deploying robust machine learning models to detect fraud, assess risk, and protect our infrastructure. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of ML algorithms, strong engineering fundamentals, and the ability to translate complex data into scalable, automated risk solutions.

    Responsibilities:

    • Model Development: Design, develop, and optimize data-driven algorithms and machine learning models specifically focused on fraud detection, transaction monitoring, and risk mitigation.
    • Feature Engineering: Collect, clean, and analyze massive transactional datasets from multiple sources to identify predictive features and emerging fraud trends.
    • Deployment & Monitoring: Partner directly with the Engineering and MLOps teams to deploy models into production environments. Monitor model performance, track data drift, and retrain models to ensure ongoing accuracy.
    • Risk Strategy Optimization: Translate complex model outputs into actionable business rules and strategies. Work with the compliance and operations teams to balance fraud prevention with user friction.
    • Data Pipeline Validation: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to validate data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across all machine learning and risk pipelines.
    • Documentation & Culture: Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of model architectures, training datasets, and algorithmic decisions to support internal and external audits and regulatory requirements.

    Required Competency and Skillset:

    • Education: Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
    • Experience: 3–5 years of proven experience as a Data Scientist building and deploying machine learning models in a production environment.
    • Industry Knowledge: Experience working in the Fintech or payments industry is required.
    • Bonus/Preferred: Direct experience building fraud detection, credit risk, or anti-money laundering (AML) models is a plus.
    • Technical Stack: Strong programming skills in Python and SQL. Deep proficiency with ML libraries (e.g., Scikit-Learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, TensorFlow, or PyTorch).
    • Data Tools: Experience working with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery).
    • Soft Skills: Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex, algorithmic concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders (Legal, Finance, Operations).

    Senior Engineer, Core Support

    The Role:

    • Flutterwave is looking for a Senior Core Support Engineer to ensure the reliability, performance, and uptime of our cross-border payment platforms and to help drive the operational decisions that keep transaction processing stable across markets and rails. This is a senior, largely autonomous role: you will diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, lead resolution of high-severity issues, and analyze transaction and provider performance to inform routing and reconciliation decisions. You will work closely with engineering, product, operations and commercial teams to bridge the gap between customer experience and core payment infrastructure, and you will be expected to mentor other engineers and own gaps in documentation, process, and coverage without needing to be asked.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The role sits across two connected pillars: technical reliability and payment operations. Both are core to the position. This is not a purely technical support function.

Pillar 1 - Technical Support & Reliability Engineering

    • Technical Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex transaction processing issues, middleware anomalies, and integration faults across distributed microservices, owning resolution end-to-end rather than escalating by default.
    • Operational Automation: Identify repetitive friction points in support workflows and build script-based automations to eliminate routine manual tasks.
    • Observability & Monitoring: Use cloud-native logging and APM tools to monitor system health and catch potential anomalies before they escalate into outages.
    • Issue Resolution Leadership: Lead resolution of complex or high-severity technical issues, coordinate cross-functional input, and own post-issue reviews through to closed action items.
    • Knowledge Management: Author clear technical documentation, runbooks, and integration guides; proactively identify and close documentation gaps; troubleshooting and tooling enthusiast

    Pillar 2 - Payment Operations & Optimisation

    • Transaction & Rail Analysis: Analyze transaction success rates and failure patterns across payment rails and providers, distinguishing isolated issues from systemic degradation.
    • Provider Performance & Routing: Contribute performance and reliability data to provider scoring and routing-weight decisions, in partnership with engineering and ops leadership.
    • Process & Framework Ownership: Maintain and apply operational decision frameworks (e.g., transaction decision matrices, escalation criteria) that guide consistent resolution and escalation across the team.
    • Perform routine health checks and performance monitoring on core production payment systems.
    • Track, prioritize, and manage technical support tickets inside platforms like Jira and Happyfox within stipulated SLAs, including triage and mentorship on complex or escalated cases.
    • Conduct database inquiries and log analysis to locate the root cause of failed transactions or settlement discrepancies.
    • Monitor payment rail and provider success rates, flagging anomalies for routing or provider review.
    • Lead or co-lead cross-team post-issue reviews during reliability cadences, and own resulting action items through to completion.

Required competency and skillset to be a waver

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in an Application Support, DevOps, Site Reliability, or Payment/Technical Operations role, ideally within fintech or high-volume transactional platforms, with demonstrated ownership of a domain or workstream
    • ITIL Practitioner/Intermediate (or equivalent AWS/GCP certification) preferred; prior experience mentoring or leading within a support or operations team is a strong plus

    • Assigned functional leaders view the BizOps Senior Manager as a trusted partner and proactively bring risks, blockers, and decisions to them
    • Weekly reports for assigned orgs are consistently on time, complete, and decision-ready
    • Zero surprises at MBR — risks are surfaced and escalated before they reach the review table
    • Dashboards for assigned orgs are accurate, up-to-date, and actively used by functional leadership
    • The accountability system is genuinely embedded within assigned orgs — not treated as a compliance exercise
    • Governance forums are consistently well attended, action-oriented, and result in clear ownership, timely decisions, and measurable follow-through.
