    Assistant Lecturer (Medical Laboratory Science)

    JOB PURPOSE

    • The Assistant Lecturer in MLS is a clinical-academic apprentice, trained to combine diagnostic accuracy, laboratory discipline, biosafety consciousness and scientific inquiry, while being developed into a future diagnostic scientist, educator and innovator serving Africa’s health systems.
    • The purpose of this job is to support undergraduate teaching and laboratory instruction, participate in research and diagnostic quality-improvement activities, and pursue advanced academic development towards full lecturing responsibilities in Medical Laboratory Science.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • B.MLS from a recognised university and

    • Current MLSCN registration and valid practising licence.

    Academic Qualifications (Mandatory)

    • B.MLS from a recognised university and
    • M.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Science (or relevant MLS specialty) or firm evidence of enrolment/progress at appointment (where permitted).
    • Current MLSCN registration and valid practising licence.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

    • 3 years post-qualification experience (clinical, diagnostic or academic).
    • Teaching assistantship/clinical bench experience is an advantage.
    • Student/Associate membership of recognised MLS or biomedical bodies encouraged.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

    • Laboratory discipline; diagnostic reasoning; biosafety and QA/QC awareness; teamwork; digital literacy (LIS/basic molecular tools).

    Lecturer I (Biochemistry)

    JOB PURPOSE

    • Lecturer I denotes academic maturity and leadership; a scholar-scientist who advances biochemical knowledge, mentors others, and anchors UAST’s ambition to be Africa’s reference point for applied biochemical science.
    • The purpose of this rank is to deliver high-quality independent teaching, lead impactful research, mentor junior staff, and contribute meaningfully to institutional development and innovation.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Coordinate core Biochemistry courses and laboratories.
    • Supervise undergraduate research projects.
    • Lead/co-lead funded or strategic research initiatives.
    • Publish in reputable journals and present at scientific fora.
    • Serve on School/University committees and accreditation teams.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • PhD in Biochemistry or Senate-approved cognate discipline.
    • Minimum: Four (4) scholarly publications, at least two (2) in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
    • Evidence of biochemical innovation, patents, products, datasets or translational outputs is an added advantage.
    • Active membership of recognised national/international biochemical or scientific bodies.

    Academic Qualifications (Mandatory)

    • PhD in Biochemistry or Senate-approved cognate discipline.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

    • At least three (3) years as Lecturer II (or equivalent).

    Lecturer II (Biochemistry)

    JOB PURPOSE

    • Lecturer II represents independent academic practice; a biochemical scientist capable of owning undergraduate courses, initiating research, and translating biochemical principles into health, food, environmental and industrial solutions relevant to Africa.
    • The purpose of this job therefore, is to independently teach undergraduate Biochemistry courses, conduct credible research, contribute to innovation and community engagement, and support academic governance in line with UAST, NUC and international best standards.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Teaching:

    • Independently teach assigned Biochemistry courses (theory and laboratory).
    • Design course outlines, practicals and assessments compliant with C-CMAS.

    Research & Scholarship:

    • Initiate and conduct independent or collaborative research.
    • Publish in recognised scientific journals and present at conferences.

    Innovation & Community Impact:

    • Contribute to applied research in food biochemistry, nutritional biochemistry, medicinal biochemistry, mechanochemistry, toxicology or biotechnology.
    • Participate in community-oriented research or industry-linked projects.

    Academic Service:

    • Serve on departmental/school committees; support accreditation and QA.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Assistant Lecturer (Biochemistry)

     JOB PURPOSE

    • The Assistant Lecturer role is a research-in-formation and teaching-apprenticeship rank, designed to groom future biochemical scientists grounded in rigorous laboratory science, applied problem-solving, and Africa-relevant innovation in health, food systems, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.
    • The purpose of this job is therefore to support undergraduate teaching and laboratory instruction, assist in research activities, pursue doctoral training, and internalise UAST’s standards of academic excellence, safety, innovation and community relevance.

    • Assist in delivery of lectures, tutorials and practical classes in core Biochemistry courses.
