    Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) Assistant

    Reports to:    Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) Officer

    About the Project

    This project aims to enhance the resilience of the most vulnerable communities in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria by delivering integrated, multi-sectoral lifesaving services. Special attention is given to the needs of women, children, and persons with disabilities. This role will support the implementation of the initiative: \"Integrated Multi-Sectoral Lifesaving Assistance to Conflict- and Shock-Affected Populations in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.\"

    Job Summary:

    The Food Security and Livelihoods Assistant will support implementing field-level activities related to agricultural livelihoods and nutrition-sensitive cash transfer programs. The role focuses on improving household food production, income generation, and dietary diversity for vulnerable communities through on-farm support and cash-based interventions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist in the planning and execution of small-scale farming, home gardening, and livestock activities.
    • Mobilize and train farmers on improved, climate-resilient farming practices and post-harvest handling.
    • Facilitate the establishment of demonstration plots and clusters/groups.
    • Conduct regular field visits to monitor progress and provide technical assistance under supervision.
    • Participate in beneficiary selection and verification processes for cash assistance targeting nutritionally vulnerable households.
    • Assist in organizing and facilitating cash disbursement events (e.g., mobile money, vouchers).
    • Collaborate with the nutrition team to ensure cash transfers are linked to improved food access and dietary outcomes.
    • Monitor how cash is being used and support post-distribution assessments to measure the impact on household nutrition and food security.
    • Conduct awareness campaigns on the objectives of FSL and nutrition-related activities.
    • Support behavior change communication on nutrition-sensitive agriculture and the importance of diverse diets.
    • Liaise with community leaders, local partners, and government extension services for coordination and acceptance.
    • Assist with the collection of baseline, monitoring, and evaluation data for all activities.
    • Maintain accurate records of distributions, trainings, and beneficiary participation.
    • Report challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations to the FSL Officer or Project Manager.

    Qualifications

    • Diploma or Bachelor\'s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Nutrition, Rural Development, or a related field.
    • At least 1–2 years of relevant field experience in agricultural livelihoods or cash-based programming.
    • Basic knowledge of nutrition and its link to food security.
    • Experience working with rural or vulnerable communities, especially women and children.
    • Strong community mobilization and interpersonal skills.
    • Practical understanding of farming systems and/or home gardening.
    • Familiarity with mobile data collection tools (e.g., KoboToolbox) is an advantage.
    • Ability to work under pressure and travel to remote areas.
    • Commitment to humanitarian principles, accountability, and gender equity.
    • Must be a resident of Zamfara State.
    • Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.

    Job Summary:

    The FSL Officer will support the design, implementation, supervision, and monitoring of food security and livelihood activities with a strong focus on on-farm production, home gardening, and the implementation of cash transfer programs that enhance nutritional outcomes for vulnerable households. This role ensures that program activities are implemented effectively, meet quality standards, and contribute to the program\'s goals of improving household food security, income generation, and nutrition.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the planning and implementation of on-farm interventions such as climate-smart agriculture, home/kitchen gardens, small livestock, and sustainable crop production.
    • Provide technical assistance and training to farmers on good agricultural practices (GAP), pest and disease management, soil fertility, and post-harvest handling.
    • Monitor the progress of farm activities and ensure beneficiaries are adopting promoted techniques.
    • Coordinate input distribution (seeds, tools, fertilizers) and track usage and impact.
    • Liaise with local agricultural extension officers and other stakeholders.
    • Support the identification and registration of eligible beneficiaries based on vulnerability and nutrition criteria.
    • Coordinate and supervise cash transfer distributions (e.g., unconditional cash, nutrition-sensitive vouchers, etc.).
    • Monitor the utilization of cash transfers and provide nutrition counseling and messaging to support positive behavior change.
    • Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team to assess the impact of cash transfers on household food security and dietary diversity.
    • Facilitate community mobilization and participation in FSL activities.
    • Conduct or facilitate training sessions for farmer groups, cooperatives, and community volunteers.
    • Promote inclusive participation, especially of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
    • Conduct regular field visits to ensure activity quality, beneficiary feedback, and timely implementation.
    • Document success stories, challenges, and lessons learned.
    • Submit timely and accurate reports on activity progress, achievements, and challenges.
    • Contribute to assessments, surveys (e.g., KAP, PDM), and other learning initiatives.
    • Participate in relevant sector coordination meetings and local government engagement.
    • Collaborate with other sectors (WASH, Health, Nutrition) for integrated programming.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor\'s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Nutrition, Rural Development, or related field.
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in implementing agricultural or livelihoods projects, preferably in humanitarian or development contexts.
    • Experience with cash transfer programming and nutrition-sensitive interventions.
    • Strong understanding of food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture concepts.
    • Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
    • Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, or UN agencies.
    • Familiarity with tools such as HEA, IPC, or SMART surveys.
    • Knowledge of local languages and cultural context.
    • Experience using mobile data collection tools (e.g., Kobo, ODK).

    Hygiene Promotion Officer

    Job Summary:

    The Hygiene Promotion Officer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring hygiene promotion activities. This role involves working closely with communities to raise awareness about good hygiene practices, reduce the incidence of diseases, and ensure the sustainability of WASH interventions. The position holder will collaborate with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to drive behavior change and improve project outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Facilitate training and promotional activities towards improving the hygiene and sanitation practices of the local experts and communities.
    • Engage with community members, leaders, and local organizations to promote active participation in hygiene promotion activities.
    • Develop and regularly update a detailed project work plan guiding the project implementation and ensure this is used by the project team to monitor project progress towards completion of the WASH component of the project.
    • Conduct training for community health workers, volunteers, and other key stakeholders on hygiene promotion techniques and approaches.
    • Ensure that a joint multi-sectorial rapid needs assessment is carried out, analysis is done, and a hygiene promotion strategy is designed based on the findings.
    • Work closely with schools, health facilities, and other community institutions to integrate hygiene promotion into their operations.
    • Collaborate with health, education, and nutrition sectors to ensure a holistic approach to improving community health.
    • Compile weekly, monthly, and periodical progress reports both for internal and external consumption.
    • Oversee monitoring and evaluation activities in the WASH component.
    • Ensure that PHP team members are fully aware of the hygiene promotion strategy and that all activities are in line with strategy activities.
    • Prepare training tools on relevant technical topics and conduct training for both internal staff and external stakeholders.
    • Assess areas for improvement and record lessons learned for future activities.
    • Work closely with the Nutrition team in integrating activities toward improving service delivery to the target population.
    • Prepare case studies, success stories, and other documentation to highlight the impact of hygiene promotion activities.
    • Providing day-to-day management of staff directly under your responsibility.
    • Develops and encourages innovative solutions.
    • Participate in seminars and training workshops useful to the accomplishment of sensitization activities and the attainment of project objectives.

    Qualifications

    • B.Sc. in Environmental Health, Public Health, Social Sciences, and Hygiene and Sanitation-related field.
    • Must be a resident of Zamfara state.
    • 3 4 years of relevant work experience in supervising hygiene promotion activities.

    • Assist in conducting home visits and visits to the community (schools, health facilities, etc.) to identify gaps in terms of hygiene, sanitation, and use of water.
    • Organize emergency hygiene promotion awareness-raising sessions.
    • Mobilize communities and health facilities to adopt safe hygiene practices as promoted by the project (latrine construction, hand washing facilities, environmental cleanliness).
    • Assist in conducting training sessions for the community workers and/or targeted populations.
    • Conduct focus group discussions for Women and Girls to identify locations for the construction of WASH facilities.
    • Assist in the process of beneficiary selection to receive NFI assistance.
    • Assist in beneficiary registration.
    • Assist in distributing shelter, hygiene, and NFI kits to registered beneficiaries.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of National Diploma in Public Health or Health related field;
    • Motivated, open, creative, mature, responsible, flexible and, culturally sensitive;
    • Willing and able to be based and travel regularly within remote areas, where services are limited;
    • Fluency in Hausa and English;

    Nutrition Assistant

    Job Summary

    The Nutrition Assistant will support the implementation of nutrition interventions aimed at reducing malnutrition in vulnerable communities. This includes assisting with community screenings, referrals, awareness-raising, and follow-up of malnourished individuals, particularly children under five and pregnant/lactating women. The role also supports data collection, community engagement, and capacity-building activities to improve the overall nutritional status of target populations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) screenings and other assessments to identify malnourished children and women.
    • Refer identified cases of acute malnutrition to appropriate health/nutrition facilities or treatment centers.
    • Follow up on referred cases to ensure they receive appropriate care and track recovery.
    • Conduct community sensitization sessions on key nutrition topics such as Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), maternal nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
    • Support behavior change communication (BCC) activities to promote healthy eating practices and food utilization.
    • Engage with community leaders and volunteers to raise awareness of available nutrition services.
    • Assist in the organization and distribution of nutrition supplements (e.g., Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food RUTF, micronutrients).
    • Support the implementation of targeted supplementary feeding programs (TSFP) or blanket supplementary feeding programs (BSFP), as needed.
    • Monitor and report on the use of distributed items and adherence to nutrition protocols.
    • Maintain accurate records of beneficiaries screened, referred to, and followed up with.
    • Assist in data collection and entry for nutrition program monitoring and evaluation.
    • Provide timely updates and reports to the Nutrition Officer or supervisor on field activities, challenges, and successes.
    • Support the training and supervision of community health workers (CHWs) and volunteers involved in nutrition activities.
    • Participate in coordination meetings with health and nutrition partners at the community level.
    • Promote integration of nutrition with other programs such as WASH, food security, and health.

    Qualifications

    • Diploma or certificate in Nutrition, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field.
    • At least 1–2 years of experience in implementing community nutrition or health programs, preferably in humanitarian or development settings.
    • Experience conducting MUAC screenings and community-based nutrition activities is an asset.
    • Familiarity with CMAM, IYCF, and other community nutrition approaches.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work in rural or hard-to-reach areas with limited supervision.
    • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and data entry tools).
    • Understanding of local context and language is an advantage.
    • Commitment to humanitarian values, accountability, and gender sensitivity.

    Nutrition Officer

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the design and implementation of nutrition-specific interventions within the project, focusing on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, maternal nutrition, and malnutrition prevention.
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance on the management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases, ensuring adherence to national protocols and international best practices.
    • Oversee the training and capacity-building of Community Health Workers (CHWs), Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs), and volunteers on nutrition, including MUAC screening, IYCF practices, and nutrition education.
    • Conduct regular field visits to monitor and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nutrition activities, ensuring that all interventions are culturally appropriate and meet the needs of the target populations.
    • Collaborate closely with the Project Manager and other team members to integrate nutrition with other components of the project, including food security, hygiene promotion, and livelihood activities.
    • Support the development and dissemination of nutrition education materials, tailored to the local context, for use in household-level nutrition and hygiene promotion sessions.
    • Ensure that nutrition-related data is accurately collected, analyzed, and reported, contributing to project reports and informing decision-making.
    • Engage with local health authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to strengthen coordination and alignment with national nutrition policies and programs.
    • Contribute to the identification and implementation of innovative approaches to improve nutrition outcomes and resilience among vulnerable populations.
    • Assist in the preparation of project reports, proposals, and other documentation related to nutrition activities.

    Qualifications

    • BSc. degree in Nutrition, Public Health, or a related field. MSC. in Public Health or Nutritional Sciences is highly desirable.
    • At least 5 years of experience in designing and implementing nutrition programs, particularly in emergency or conflict-affected settings.
    • In-depth knowledge of malnutrition treatment protocols (OTP, CMAM), IYCF practices, and Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC).
    • Experience in capacity building and training of local health workers and community volunteers on nutrition-related topics.
    • Strong understanding of the local context in Zamfara State, including cultural practices related to nutrition and child care.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt interventions based on evolving needs and conditions.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with fluency in English. Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
    • Proficiency in data analysis and experience with monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programs.
