About CILT Nigeria
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) is the leading International Professional body for all sectors of the Transport and Logistics Industry. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1919 and granted a Royal Charter on the 26th of November, 1926, the CILT was actually established to promote knowledge of the science and art of Logistics and Transport and to provide a source of authoritative views for communication to government, industry and the community at large.
The CILT International headquarter is in the United Kingdom charged with the function of finance and administration while CILT Hong Kong and CILT Republic of Ireland are in charge of membership and education respectively.
The Institute is involved in human capital development through long and short term educational courses and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programmes. As an International Institute, CILT is highly decentralized and yet centralized by granting autonomy to countries to function independently but with centralized certification and membership processes. In order to ensure that persons granted membership are really qualified for such grades, standard examinations and membership procedures are strictly followed. With this in place, it becomes very easy to have international membership once the criteria are met. The membership of the Institute confers on holders international recognition in at least 33 countries of the world. CILT therefore is an International professional body that helps members to assess local and international opportunities, networking and a host of others. Indeed, CILT offers quality education and training programmes that lead to the award of qualifications that are recognized locally and internationally.
CILT Nigeria as a National Council of the International professional body was established in 1958 and has been involved in overseeing, regulating, training and certification of transport professionals nationwide.
As the leading Professional body in Logistics and Transport, the Institute provides an excellent platform for career development and serves the interest of thousands of members globally working in over 100 countries. In recognition of the ever growing importance of its status and activities, the CILT revised its governance structure in 1990; one of the resulting benefits is greater autonomy and recognition of larger local membership. Further more, there are now Councils in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, North America, Pakistan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Seychelles, South Africa, Egypt, Uganda, Nigeria, etc. All administrative matters in these areas are handled locally, enabling a faster and more efficient service delivery to members and the industry.
There is close liaison between the local branch of CILT and such organizations as the Ministry of Education, Universities, Colleges, employers and employers’ associations, other statutory bodies, etc In this way, local needs where appropriate, are sure of being recognized and incorporated into professional education shemes.
