    Vessel Accountant

    Role Summary:

    • The Vessel Accountant will be responsible for managing the complete accounting and financial reporting of assigned vessels, ensuring compliance with company policies, international financial reporting standards, and shipping industry requirements. The role involves close coordination with technical, operations, business development, and procurement departments for the timely and accurate recording of vessel-related financial information.

    Job Responsibilities:

    Financial Management & Reporting:

    • Maintain full accounting records for each vessel, including revenues, operating costs, capital expenditure (CAPEX), and maintenance expenses.
    • Track voyage costs, charter hire, fuel (bunkers), crew costs, port charges, and other vessel-related expenses.
    • Ensure accurate allocation of costs and revenues to individual vessels and projects.
    • Review and reconcile vessel running accounts and intercompany transactions.
    • Ensure correct allocation of costs between vessels, departments, and cost center’s
    • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly management reports including variance analysis (Budget vs Actual), and board-level financial reports relating to marine operations.
    • Prepare and maintain GLs, Trial Balance, and annual financial reports.

    Budgeting & Forecasting:

    • Preparation of annual vessel budgets and rolling forecasts.
    • Monitor budget utilization and highlight deviations or cost overruns.
    • Support management in vessel performance analysis and cost optimization initiatives.
    • Conduct financial performance analysis for each vessel, including utilization, cost per operating day, and profitability metrics.
    • Support commercial evaluations of charter rates, contract pricing, and operational decisions.
    •  Support long-term financial planning for vessel acquisitions, upgrades, dry-docking, and disposal.

    Asset & CAPEX Accounting:

    • Maintain vessel fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules.
    • Account for dry-docking, major repairs, and capitalized vessel costs.
    • Support evaluation of vessel impairment and asset valuation when required.

    Invoicing & Payment Management:

    • Timely preparation of invoices for vessel services, charter hires, and projects.
    • Review and verify vendor invoices, delivery notes, and service completion certificates.
    • Process vessel payments, ensuring compliance with internal approval matrix and banking procedures.
    • Coordinate with the purchasing and technical teams to ensure proper documentation for payments.
    • Prepare receivables and payables reports and conduct receivables and payables reconciliations.

    Audit, Compliance & Documentation:

    • Coordinate with internal and external auditors during vessel audits.
    • Maintain all vessel-related documentation for compliance with accounting standards and statutory requirements.
    • Ensure adherence to group accounting policies, IFRS, and local GAAP where applicable.

    Liaison & Coordination:

    • Liaise with Vessel Managers, Superintendents, and Crew Management for technical and operational inputs.
    • Work closely with the Technical, Operations, and Procurement teams for real-time accounting of transactions.
    • Support management by providing high-level reports and analysis for strategic decision-making.

    • Serve as a trusted advisor to management on people risk, change management, and organizational effectiveness.

    Experience & Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • Relevant professional qualification (e.g. ICAN, ACCA, CIMA) is required or strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of (4) years’ cognate finance experience, preferably within marine, oil & gas, energy, or logistics operations.
    • Demonstrable exposure to vessel accounting or maritime project-based accounting is a strong advantage.
    • Solid working knowledge of IFRS and management accounting principles.
    • Hands-on experience with accounting software and financial systems.

    Skill & Competencies:

    • Strong analytical and financial reporting capability, with a focus on accuracy and timeliness.
    • Proven ability to maintain complete and accurate vessel accounts.
    • Practical understanding of marine, oil & gas, energy, and logistics operating environments.
    • Proficiency in MS Excel, Power BI, and accounting software.
    • Good understanding of vessel operations and cost structures.
    • Ability to manage reconciliations across vendor and vessel accounts with minimal error.
    • Capacity to work independently, prioritise effectively, and meet tight reporting deadlines.
    • Effective communication and coordination skills across technical, operations, and commercial teams.
    • High attention to detail with a strong compliance and audit orientation.
