USAID-Funded Youth-Powered Ecosystem to Advance Urban Adolescent Health (YPE4AH) YPE4AH Youth C4C Leadership Manual And Pilot Training December 2020

    A. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

In May 2020, USAID Nigeria awarded the Youth-Powered Ecosystem to Advance Urban Adolescent Health (YPE4AH) to DAI and its partners: Yellow Brick Road (YBR), Youth
Empowerment and Development Initiative (YEDI), Women Friendly Initiative (WFI) and Grassroots Soccer (GRS). This five-year program is expected to improve the health and well- being of urban, under-privileged, out-of-school and unmarried adolescents aged 15–19 years in Lagos and Kano States by increasing voluntary family planning (FP) uptake and continued use from a holistic, human capital perspective. Working through Youth Hubs - safe spaces for youth to seek and access FP and reproductive health (RH) information and referrals - the project will adapt and scale up evidenced-based, high impact skills curricula activities to spur healthy behavior change among adolescents.
The project will integrate youth voice in local health systems governance and urban planning, helping to move their issues higher on the policy agenda and increase investing in programs for youth. The methodology will cover goal setting, analyzing evidence, advocating ideas, and building relationships to effect change. YPE4AH will train and mentor youth in leadership and policy advocacy skills. Training and mentorship will help give youth the skills and confidence to interact with policy makers, determine entry points for advocacy, and engage in social accountability mechanisms. To achieve this, the program will adapt DAI’s Champions for Change (C4C) experiential leadership development methodology, which we tailored to youth
under the USAID Tanzania Advancing Youth project.
