    Routine Immunization (RI) Master Trainer

    Overview

    • Nigeria has set an ambitious target to achieve at least 80% coverage for all routine immunization antigens Nationally and in every state by 2027, with a strong focus on reducing zero dose and under immunized children.
    • This requires a resilient PHC system, skilled health workforce, robust cold chain and logistics, and a strong culture of data use for action.
    • The Nigeria Strategy for Immunization and PHC System Strengthening (NSIPSS) 2023 2027 provides the National roadmap to realize these goals and emphasizes integrated service delivery, sustainable domestic financing, optimized micro planning, and equity focused approaches to reach urban slums, hard to reach and marginalized populations.

    Purpose of Assignment

    • MCGL-RISE IHP seeks experienced Routine Immunization Master Trainers to lead the capacity strengthening of RI providers in supported states.
    • The assignment will build competencies across key RI domains including service delivery, cold chain and vaccine management, session planning and micro planning, injection safety and waste management, surveillance and Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) detection/reporting, data quality and use, interpersonal communication and community linkage, and supportive supervision.

    Responsibilities

    • The Master Trainers will support state and LGA teams to implement standardized capacity building for RI providers in secondary and primary health facilities, aligned to National policies and NSIPSS 2023 2027.
    • Activities include pre training preparation, delivery of competency based training using updated modules and an agreed agenda, post training mentorship, and contribution to data driven performance reviews.

    Expected Outcomes

    • Improved knowledge and skills of RI health workers across priority competencies with percentage point mean improvement between pre and post tests.
    • Operational facility micro plans updated, with actionable strategies for zero dose/under immunized tracking and outreach.
    • Strengthened cold chain and vaccine management practices demonstrated through supervision checklists and on the job coaching.
    • Improved completeness/timeliness of RI reporting and routine data use in monthly facility meetings.
    • Documented best practices, lessons, and an implementation plan for follow up supportive supervision.

    Deliverables

    • Reviewed and adapted RI training agenda and materials aligned to National guidelines; validated slides, job aids, and checklists.
    • Facilitation of competency based training sessions (see sample agenda) including practicum and hands on demonstrations.
    • Facility action plans for RI performance improvement (per facility trained).
    • Supportive supervision/mentorship plan and tools; at least one post training mentorship visit per facility within 4 6 weeks.
    • Comprehensive training report with attendance, pre/post test analysis, photos, recommendations, and follow up actions.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelors Degree or higher in Public Health, Nursing, Medicine or related field; EPI-specific certification an advantage.
    • Documented expertise in RI, cold chain and logistics, AEFI surveillance, data management, training facilitation, and supportive supervision.
    • 7 - 10 years experience delivering RI capacity building with state/LGA systems and partners.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills and proficiency in English; local language ability is an asset.
    • Member of the RI Master trainers.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office for training management and reporting.

    Coordination & Reporting:

    • Master Trainers will work under the guidance of the National/State Primary Health Care
    • Development Agency/Board in collaboration with MCGL-RISE IHP and partners.
    • Daily coordination will be with the State Immunization and Logistics teams and LGA Routine
    • Immunization Focal Persons. Reports and deliverables will be submitted to the JHPIEGO RI
    • Technical Lead with copies to SPHCDA and NPHCDA focal points as applicable.

    Standards & References:

    • All activities must align with National RI policies, the NSIPSS 2023 2027, and partner guidance.
    • Training content should reflect updated RI schedule, cold chain SOPs, AEFI guidelines, National data tools (tally sheets, registers, summary forms), and DHIS2 reporting standards.
