    Mineralogist

    Job Summary

    • Examines and classifies minerals, ores, soil, and other earth materials. Collects samples and perform mineralogical tests and examinations. Analyzes various minerals by using scientific equipment to determine structure and properties. Advises the procurement team on purchase decisions regarding the procurement of minerals.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Examines, analyzes, and classifies minerals, gems, and precious stones.
    • Isolates specimens from ore, rocks, or matrices.
    • Makes microscopic examinations to determine the shape, surface markings, and other physical characteristics.
    • Performs physical and chemical tests and makes x-ray examinations to determine the composition of specimen and type of crystalline structure.
    • Identifies and classifies samples.
    • Interprets and reports data collected from the field.
    • Develops data and theories on the mode of origin, occurrence, and possible uses of minerals.
    • Liaises with subcontractors and suppliers.
    • Visits sites of interest to study the earth and work on extraction and mining projects.
    • Conducts quality control on the suitability of materials and inspects projects, purchasing orders, and shipments.
    • Investigates and evaluate natural resource deposits.

    EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in mineralogy, geology, or geoscience from an accredited institution.

    TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office tools.
    • Technology savvy.
    • Proficient in the use of mineralogical and geological tools.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Good knowledge of the attributes of ores, soil, minerals, and other earth materials.
    • Thorough understanding of minerals classification, quality control, and testing.

    WORK EXPERIENCE:

    • 3 - 5 years of experience as a Mineralogist.
