    Midwife/Nurse (National Position)

    The Midwife is responsible for the implementation of Maternal and Neonatal Care, in particular: Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC), Antenatal Care and Postnatal Care, Counselling, and provision of Family Planning (including long-term methods) including Post Abortion care. She ensures that services offered at the INTERIORS-supported health facilities are of quality standard respecting INTERSOS values, policies, protocols, and universal health standards.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ensure the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and wound care in accordance with INTERSOS Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation of standardized protocols.
    • Collaborate with the medical doctor and/or nurse in the management of Sexual violence cases.
    • Provide counseling sessions for patients and beneficiaries on ANC, PNC, and IYCF.
    • Assess the feasibility of referral of pregnant women from the TBAs to the BEmONC facility for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries
    • Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met according to INTERSOS specifications
    • Ensures timely supported referrals to the nearest CEMONC Facility.
    • Ensures staff adherence to universal hygiene standards/precautions, appropriate waste management, bio-hazard prevention, infection prevention, and control in the health facilities. Works with cleaning staff to maintain general cleanliness of the working environment.
    • Guarantee a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders).
    • Properly follow up on all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, informing mothers and relatives about the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination, and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
    • Ensure patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected.
    • Adhere to and practice the use of Universal Precautions and proper waste management at all INTERSOS-supported health facilities.
    • Supervise that administrative procedures of admissions and hospitalizations comply with national protocols, as well as verify patients are properly informed and receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.)
    • Participate in the organization of the ward in collaboration with other midwives and the Senior Nurse Team Lead; ensure transfer of relevant information to the next shift team (especially identifying risk cases)
    • According to national protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases needing referral and send them in time, clean up the newborn, execute and register first neonatal medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detecting possible anomalies/infections of the new-born and reporting them to the doctor, to ensure successful interventions; supervise the use of drugs, facilities, and obstetric material, to ensure, in accordance
    • Ensure community participation in reproductive healthcare delivery services through regular meetings and consultation of the Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) and Community Health Committees (CHC).

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Qualification as a registered midwife
    • At least two years of professional experience as a midwife
    • Recent clinical experience (at least six months within the last 24 months)
    • Experience in labor wards and difficult case management
    • If working as an independent midwife, the previous experience must include extensive numbers of deliveries as well as pre-and post-natal care and relevant experience in hospital settings
    • Willingness to work in unstable areas
    • Commitment to INTERSOS’s work and values

    • Essential computer literacy (word, excel, and internet)
    • Leadership, people management and development, teamwork, and cooperation

    • Good command of written and spoken English, Kanuri, and Hausa Languages
