    Dialysis Nurse

    Job Summary 

    The Dialysis Nurse provides clinical and holistic care for patients (and their families), ensuring the provision of quality-driven evidence-based patient care. He/she must have the ability to work effectively, independently and within a multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural team to deliver the highest quality of care.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical & Dialysis Care

    • Perform within standards of nursing care for dialysis patients, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized care programs.
    • Maintain high standards of nursing care using a systematic, evidence-based approach.
    • Be responsive to patients’ conditions and adjust care plans accordingly.
    • Monitor patient response to dialysis treatment, vital signs, vascular access, laboratory findings, and general health.
    • Administer dialysis-related medications (IV/oral) per physician orders or protocol.
    • Conduct pre- and post-dialysis patient education, ensuring patients and families understand care, lifestyle, and treatment plans.

    Dialysis Procedure Management

    • Prepare dialysis delivery systems, dialysate baths, and dialyzers; ensure all mandatory machine alarm tests are completed.
    • Cannulate vascular access (fistula, graft, or catheter) aseptically and monitor for complications.
    • Assess, prepare, and care for dialysis catheters, applying sterile dressings and performing access surveillance for early signs of infection or failure.
    • Monitor patient reactions during dialysis and adjust interventions as required.
    • Conduct post-dialysis assessment, discharge patients when stable, and document all treatment data.
    • Disassemble, disinfect, and maintain dialysis machines, water treatment equipment, and perform water quality testing according to protocols.

    Quality Control & Compliance

    • Adhere to dialysis protocols, infection control procedures, and hospital policies.
    • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure all documentation complies with hospital and regulatory standards.
    • Participate in clinical audits, KPIs, and quality improvement activities.
    • Support hospital accreditation processes and comply with all defined standards and procedures.

    Safety Management

    • Promote patient safety, including infection prevention and blood-borne pathogen precautions.
    • Identify and report clinical or operational risks in the dialysis unit.
    • Take immediate action in emergencies and respond to adverse events during dialysis treatment.
    • Ensure all dialysis equipment, consumables, and medications are checked, functional, and safe to use.

    Communication & Coordination

    • Collaborate with nephrologists, multidisciplinary teams, patients, and families throughout dialysis care.
    • Provide structured clinical handovers to relevant healthcare providers.
    • Address patient concerns and questions about dialysis treatment, medications, and home care.
    • Maintain consistent communication with the Dialysis Unit Manager regarding patient care, workflow, and operational issues.

    Problem-Identification & Escalation

    • Identify changes in patient condition or potential complications early during dialysis.
    • Take appropriate initial action within scope of practice.
    • Escalate complex or high-risk cases promptly to the Dialysis Unit Manager or relevant physician.

    Documentation & Reporting

    • Accurately document all patient assessments, interventions, dialysis treatments, and outcomes.
    • Complete incident reports, medication records, and any unit-specific forms according to hospital policy.
    • Use documentation to support patient care continuity, auditing, and quality improvement initiatives.

    Risk Awareness & Management

    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, KPI tracking, and risk assessments.
    • Suggest workflow, patient care, or infection control improvements to enhance safety and efficiency.
    • Undertake other clinical and operational activities as assigned by the Dialysis Unit Manager.

    Creativity & Continuous Improvement

    • Suggest improvements in dialysis workflows, patient care processes, or infection control practices.
    • Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives, audits, and accreditation activities.
    • Innovate patient education methods and support junior staff learning through creative teaching approaches.
    • Maintain and update dialysis technical knowledge, skills, and evidence-based practice competencies

    Requirements

    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in dialysis or nephrology nursing (recent experience preferred).
    • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
    • Knowledge of infection prevention, blood-borne pathogen control, and emergency dialysis procedures.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in dialysis machine operation, vascular access cannulation, and water treatment monitoring.
    • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
    • Ability to prioritize care, act decisively in emergencies, and maintain meticulous documentation.
    • Flexibility regarding shift patterns and clinical areas.
    • Experience mentoring or teaching junior staff is an advantage
