Assistant Basketball Coach at American University of Nigeria (AUN)

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Assistant Basketball Coach will assist in planning, coaching, recruiting as well as managing and directing the Basketball program. He will recruit basketball players, decide player positions, guide player’s performance and instruct players on proper technique. The incumbent will be in charge of setting tryouts, selecting a team and setting play and practice schedules in accordance with the policies and procedures of the American University of Nigeria.

DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:  

• Collaborate with the basketball coach to design and implement comprehensive player development programs, including skill development sessions, strength and conditioning programs, and mental skills training.
• Assist with the recruitment of student-athletes by identifying and evaluating potential prospects, maintaining recruiting databases, and conducting scouting of high school and club basketball games and tournaments.
• Assist in planning and conducting team practices, focusing on individual skill development, team cohesion, and game strategy implementation.
• Analyze game footage to identify opponent strengths and weaknesses, develop game plans, and assist in the strategic preparation for upcoming games.
• Represent the Director of Student Athletics and AUN at community events, alumni functions, and fundraising activities, fostering positive relationships and promoting the university's athletic programs.
• Ensure compliance with all university, conference, and national governing body (e.g., Nigerian University Games Association) rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics.
• Serve as a mentor and role model for student-athletes, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to promote personal and athletic development both on and off the court.

Requirements for the position: 

• Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, or a related field from a reputable tertiary institution.
• Master's degree preferred.
• Membership Certificate of the Nigerian Institute for Industrial Security would be a plus.
• Certification as an Environment and Safety Manager is also a plus.
• Extensive experience in campus security, law enforcement, or a related field, with at least 10 years of progressively responsible leadership roles.
• Knowledge of security best practices, emergency management, and risk assessment.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Protection Professional, Certified Emergency Manager) preferred.
• Knowledge of relevant Nigerian laws and regulations is highly desirable.
• Must be able to effectively handle crises. 
• Must be able to travel when directed, for work, tenant visits, and meetings. 
• Must maintain a valid driver license and current automobile insurance coverage 

Other requirements, abilities for the position: 

• Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds using proper ergonomic techniques without assistance. 
• Must be proficient in and be able to use Microsoft Office to develop crime analysis reports and databases. 
• Know how to utilize CPR and first aid at work.
• Strong critical thinking skills are required.
• Excellent problem solving skills are required.
