    Animal Extension Services Consultants

    No. of Openings: 2 Openings (One consultant will cover Michika and 1 consultant will cover Hong and Gombi)

    Contract Duration: 10 Months (June 2023- March 2024)

    Background

    Animal Extension Services are demand-driven extension services offered to animal production actors in the agricultural value chain. Through various extension services and training in animal production, these services will make it easier for farmers to access relevant technological knowledge, information, and mediate their interactions. This will also help to develop their technical and management capacity skills.

    The small ruminant intervention implemented by the NN program team forms a key part of the agricultural sequence designed to provide income generation sources and diversification of livelihood sources for households at the community level.  The activity  will involve sheep production among  1500 women in Michika and 1000 women in Gombi and Hong LGA.

    In this regard, Nuru Nigeria is seeking consultants who will provide Animal Extension Services(for sheep production) to rural women smallholder farmers in  Michika (Jigalambu, Tudun wada, Villegwa, Kwabapale, Moda, Dlaka, Ghumchi, Garta), Hong (Kala’a, Bangshika, Gashaka, Pella, Dakza) and Gombi (Tela bala, Guyaku 1, Guyaku 2) Local Government Areas. These services will include the dissemination of  useful and practical information relating to animal health, improved husbandry practices,  routine vaccine delivery, deworming, and improved health care practices of the animals and routine extension visits.

    Objectives

    The main objectives of this activity is to:

    • Provide animal extension services to women farmers in Michika, Hong, and Gombi.
    • Build the capacities of farmers around best husbandry practices in sheep Production.
    • Disseminate useful and practical information to farmers relating to animal health, including routine vaccination, deworming, and improved health care practices.

    Scope of Work/Methodology

    This activity will be carried out in all GIZ intervention communities in Michika (Tudun wada, Jigalambu, Villegwa, Kwabapale, Moda, Garta, Dlaka, Ghumchi), Hong (Bangshika, Gashaka, Dakza, Pella, Kala’a) and Gombi (Tela bala, Guyaku 1 and Guyaku 2) LGAs. The activity will involve a bi-weekly extension visit to farmers, attend to immediate call from farmers in case of emergency.

    Terms and Condition

    • Provide bi-weekly extension visits to women farmers.
    • Responsible for the care of the animals from the quarantine period till distribution time.
    • Responsible for on-call duty in case of emergency at the community level with the farmers.
    • Provide a contact person  at the community level in case of a sick animal.
    • Responsible for the Provision of routine vaccination.

    Deliverables/Expected Outputs

    By the end of the activity, the farmers in the GIZ intervention communities should be able to have practical knowledge and information relating to animal health, improved husbandry, vaccine delivery, deworming, and improved health care practices of the Animals.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry, or any related Field.
    • AT LEAST 5 years experience working in a similar role, particularly with small ruminant animals in large numbers.
    • Experience working with International or National Non-governmental organizations is preferred.
