    Accountant

    Report To: Finance Manager / Head of Finance 

    Responsibilities

    The ideal candidate will (but is not limited to):

    • To manage the day-to-day accounting operations of the engineering firm, ensuring accurate financial records, timely reporting, and compliance with Nigerian tax and regulatory requirements, while supporting project costing, billing, and cash flow management.
    • Maintain general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable records for the company and its project.
    • Record and reconcile daily transactions, including payments, receipts, and bank transfers.
    • Prepare monthly management accounts, trial balance, and basic financial statements for review by management.
    • Assist in generating project wise or site wise cost reports for ongoing engineering contracts.       
    • Process customer invoices and credit notes in line with contract terms and project milestones.
    • Follow up on outstanding debtors and coordinate with project managers to ensure timely billing and payment collection.
    • Process supplier invoices, verify supporting documents (delivery notes, approvals), and reconcile with purchase orders.
    • Assist in monitoring vendor payments and maintaining an updated vendor payment schedule.
    • Prepare payroll inputs and support the calculation of salaries, allowances, and deductions.
    • Assist in ensuring timely payment of statutory obligations such as PAYE, pension contributions, and relevant taxes.
    • Prepare and reconcile bank statements and petty cash records.
    • Provide cash flow information to management to support project funding and working capital decisions.
    • Support internal and external audits by providing accurate records and explanations of transactions.
    • Help maintain strong internal controls and documentation practices for all financial processes.

    Requirements:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or any closely related discipline from a recognized institution. 
    •  Possession of a professional certification such as ICAN, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent is a strong added advantage and may be required for career progression. 
    •  Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in accounting, financial management, or audit functions, preferably within engineering, construction, consulting, or project-based organizations. 
    • Demonstrated experience in managing project accounting, cost tracking, budgeting, and financial reporting in dynamic operational environments. 
    • Solid understanding of financial regulations, accounting principles (IFRS or GAAP), and internal control frameworks.

    Required Competencies:

    • Proficiency in the use of accounting and financial management software such as Sage, QuickBooks, SAP, or similar ERP systems. 
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including the use of formulas, pivot tables, financial modelling, and data analysis tools. 
    • Strong numerical accuracy with excellent attention to detail and a high level of integrity in handling financial data. 
    • Ability to prepare, analyse, and interpret financial statements, management accounts, and project cost reports. 
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines in fast-paced environments. 
    • High level of analytical thinking and problem-solving ability, particularly in reconciling accounts and identifying discrepancies. 
    • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders. 
    • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within cross-functional and project teams. 
    • Demonstrated professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical judgment in handling sensitive financial information.
