The CREST Awards is accredited by the British Science Association, which aims to help students to undertake projects in STEM related areas. Students' achievements in the BIEA International STEM Youth Innovation Competition can be recognised with awards at silver level.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, BIEA has adapted this year’s competition so it can be completed remotely, with entries submitted via email. Students can enter as part of a team (of up to 5 people) or as an individual competitor. Schools may have more than entry. Students who are unable to attend school may submit entries as an individual competitor, although all competitors must be registered by a responsible adult (e.g. teacher or parent). As well as prizes and medals for winning teams. All entrants who submit submissions will receive certificates.

This year’s competition will take a different format than previous years to allow as many students from around the world to participate. Judging criteria remains rigorous, however, we understand that during these unprecedented times it may not be possible to form a team. On that basis, we are accepting entries from individual students and siblings as well as school teams. If you are entering as an individual or siblings, you must be entered by an adult and if you win the prize money it will be awarded to school or charity nominated by you.
Suggested student age categories are: 9-11 years old, 12-14 years old, 15-17 years old, although siblings or students of different age categories can participate together. In these cases, we will take the eldest student’s age to use against the marking criteria.
Report writing: Competitors will use the Internet and other secondary sources to research, design and write a report on the 'Save our shores through STEM' project, helping clean up plastic from remote mud banks and waterlines through innovative and creative specifications. Submissions must be emailed by 1st June 2020 5pm (UTC).
Design: The design round is a paper-based entry, with competitors producing several concept images of their vehicle designs, including a cartoon-strip of the vehicle in action. These images should be submitted by 1st June 2020 5pm (UTC).
Presentation and Evaluation: Competitors, either individually or as part of their team, video a presentation summarising their project, including an evaluation about their project successes and challenges. This video should be submitted by 1st June 2020 5pm (UTC).
Online Q&A round: Judging of project submissions will take place between 1st-14th June 2020. On the 15th June, competitors with the highest marks will be notified whether they have been selected for the live Q&A round. This round will be a remote question and answer session, where the judges will ask the competitors questions about the project based on aspects of their report, design and video submissions. This will take the form of a remote conference call and will be arranged for a mutually convenient time between 16th-23rd June.

The team with the highest overall score will receive the £1,000 grand-prize. Each age category winner and runners up will receive a medal, certificate and trophy. All entrants will receive a certificate.

"Help us solve the global plastic problem!"
We know that the world has a plastic problem. Our oceans and lands have become polluted with our carelessly discarded plastic waste that will take 1000s of years to decompose on land, whilst the plastic in the oceans break up into toxin-laden tiny particles. Our plastic waste is now causing chemical pollution in the oceans.
What can we do?
We can use our technology to clean up the plastic waste before it turns into the environmentally disastrous chemical pollution that threatens both marine and land-based life. The competition theme in 2020 reflects two major concepts: Technological innovation and the clearing of plastic waste: “The Plastic Problem”.
