    IGCSE PHE Teacher

    Job purpose: To teach PHE in the IGCSE curriculum and mark IGCSE PHE Examination

    Reporting line: Head of Department
    Location Calabar

    Hours: Full time

    Role summary:
    This post would suit either a newly qualified or an experienced teacher. The successful candidate should be able to inspire all students to fulfil their academic potential. It is essential that the appointed person is an effective team member, who can help to promote the Faculty via curriculum enhancement trips, and is willing to actively seek opportunities to develop teaching and learning within the subject.

    The PHE IGCSE syllabus provides learners with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of physical education. It is designed to encourage enjoyment in physical activity by providing learners with an opportunity to take part in a range of physical activities and develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance. This helps learners to develop an appreciation of the necessity for sound understanding of the principles, practices and training that underpin improved performance, better health and well-being.

    Your professional duties
    Key Duties and Responsibilities

    Teaching and Learning

    • Be an exemplary teacher, clearly demonstrating effective planning, teaching organisation, and demanding high standards of attainment and behaviour in all lessons.
    • Monitor and oversee the planning and delivery of specified areas of the Physical Education Curriculum and liaise with the Director of Sport and other members of the PE team on any matters that arise (experience with the English National Curriculum, IGCSE and A Level would be considered advantageous).
    • Monitor students’ work effectively and according to the school’s requirements.
    • Provide effective written and/or oral feedback to students.
    • Monitor individual student achievement and respond accordingly.
    • Contribute to the relevant sections of the school’s evaluation and improvement documentation.
    • Attend and participate in regular meetings.
    • Attend and participate in regular CPD sessions.

    Extra-curricular

    • Be a vital part of the team that delivers a high quality and varied extracurricular programme with specific responsibility for some teams (expertise in volleyball, football, basketball, swimming, rugby or hockey would be advantageous), including coaching and accompanying students for both home and away fixtures.
    • Play an active role in supporting the provision of outdoors education including the Duke of Edinburgh
    • Award and other adventurous sporting activities linked to IGCSE PE.
    • Complete duties around the school in accordance with the weekly Duty Rota.
    • Be a House Tutor.

    We require:

    • IGCSE Qualified Teacher Status.
    • A strong and fully committed team player that is able to adapt and work in an exceptionally busy and successful department.
    • A passion for your subject and a genuine care for the wellbeing of young people.
    • Willingness and ability to take on an extensive extra-curricular role.
    • Experience of playing or coaching a specific sport/s at a high level would be considered advantageous

    Your professional duties
    Specific Duties and Responsibilities

    Teaching

    • Be an excellent teacher
    • Be committed to raising academic standards and improving the quality of teaching and learning within their subject
    • Plan lessons thoroughly in accordance with school policy and in line with the department’s schemes of work
    • Ensure that individual lessons are sufficiently challenging and enable all students to learn at all points in the lesson
    • Inspire students to continue their learning beyond lessons
    • Engender an atmosphere within lessons, which is conducive to active learning and encourages pupils to learn collaboratively
    • Actively promote the subject, for example by using suitable wall displays
    • Ensure that effective use is made of the resources available within the department and that they are well maintained
    • Actively seek CPD opportunities
    • Assessment, Recording and Reporting
    • Set ambitious, yet realistic, targets for students and encourage them to fulfil their academic potential
    • Ensure that appropriate work is set on a regular basis and is forthcoming from all students
    • Monitor and track the progress of students by setting appropriate assessments in line with departmental policy
    • Ensure that assessed work is marked on a regular basis in accordance with the departmental marking policy and that it is appropriately annotated to enable students to assess their own learning
    • Implement the department’s intervention strategies for underperforming students
    • Maintain accurate records of all assessed work
    • Complete all interim, half term and end-of-term reports in a professional manner.

    Liaison

    • A teacher is expected to liaise with:
    • The head of faculty, to make that person aware of any matters likely to affect their ability to perform their teaching and pastoral roles effectively
    • The head of faculty with regard to all academic matters
    • The head of faculty, tutors and parents with regard to students, who are a cause for concern to a member of the department in terms of underperformance
    • The head of faculty with regard to matters involving the fabric of departmental rooms and their upkeep

    • Make a significant contribution to extra-curricular activities and the day and boarding life of the school
    • Set a good example to students by appropriate dress, conduct and punctuality

    • Undertake duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Head Master (directly or indirectly)

    Skills
    Essential:

    • Ability to teach at all levels up to and including university entrance
    • Able to incorporate ICT into lessons
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to motivate and enthuse students, and work collaboratively with other colleagues
    • Ability to contribute significantly to the school’s extra-curricular programme
    • Ability to prioritize and be well organized

    Desirable:

    • Ability to teach Drama and/or Theatre Studies
    • ICT proficiency e.g. interactive lessons, development of resources for an intranet
    • Willingness to organize book clubs and reading groups
    • Willingness to organize trips to theatres and literary festivals
    • Ability to coach sports and a range of other extra-curricular activities

    Knowledge:

    • Secure subject knowledge
    • Awareness of examination specifications and requirements, and how to use this information to raise academic standards
    • Awareness of appropriate teaching and learning strategies, and how to use this practice to improve the quality of teaching and learning
    • Awareness of safeguarding issues
    • Application of AfL to the development of teaching and learning

    Job description
    SUMMARY
    Responsible for the operation and instructional leadership at elementary and secondary schools. Trains and supervises staff, sets instructional objectives, and works to build a rapport with parents.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage day-to-day activities at an elementary or secondary school.

    Qualification:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
    • A post graduate degree (ongoing) in Education.
    • Over 7 years’ experience in school administration at a UK curriculum school
    • Professional certification would be an added advantage
