    Lead Software Engineer (Fixed Project Contractor)

    Statement of Purpose

    • The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an experienced Software Engineer to support a project in the product department on a temporary basis for a period of 8-10 weeks. 
    • This role is an hourly paid position, with payments structured around pre-determined milestones to ensure clear expectations and progress tracking.

    Scope of Work

    • The engineer will support our “New Engagement Experiments“ effort, reporting to product design management.
    • You will collaborate with product design, communications, and other engineers – building and deploying software experiments that explore ways to invite more interaction and learning with Wikipedia content.
    • The focus of this work will be a time limited ‘daily play’ web-based game, utilizing Wikipedia content.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Acting as a thought-partner on a small cross-functional team
    • Developing highly interactive experimental solutions for mobile web
    • Working independently with minimal engineering support
    • Using third-party and Wikimedia APIs
    • Staying informed about new technologies and platforms
    • Instrumenting components for monitoring and analysis
    • Recommending improvements to R&D infrastructure
    • Collaborating with design and engineering teams

    Deliverables

    • Specific deliverables and timelines for these deliverables will be defined by the Project lead at the start of the contract. 

    Outcome and Performance standards

    • This work will be overseen by a Design Manager, who will be responsible for reviewing the deliverables and ensuring they meet our standards.

    Requirements
    The ideal candidate should have:

    • 5-8+ years of professional software development experience
    • Experience with cross-functional teams and new product development
    • Ability to work in a self-driven, lean environment
    • Quick adaptability to new codebases and technologies
    • Experience integrating third-party API services
    • Mobile web  development skills, including frontend frameworks (Vue.js or React), as well as API development and integration.

    Additional desired qualities include:

    • Strong belief in Wikimedia's principles of using technology ethically
    • Willingness to iterate quickly and pivot strategically
    • Background in mobile game development 
    • Clear communication skills in both synchronous and asynchronous channels
    • Cloud environment experience (preferred)
    • Open source contribution history (preferred)

    Remuneration

    • The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization with staff members including contractors based 40+ countries*. Salaries at the Wikimedia Foundation are set in a way that is competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values and culture.
    • The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$52/hour  to US$75/hour with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay.

    Staff Software Security Engineer (PHP)

    Summary

    • The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Staff Security Software Engineer to join the Product Security team to build new security technologies to protect Wikipedia and our other projects.
    • This is a very hands-on engineering role working alongside our other security team members to design and code new features to protect and reassure our users and to ensure the platform remains resilient against attacks.
    • YOU ARE ...a smart developer with experience building security features in large-scale systems. You understand the importance of testing and documentation, and common pitfalls in developing secure web applications.
    • You have a passion for the WMF mission. We do (almost) everything publicly and the work we do touches thousands of editors every day.
    • You will be working primarily on our MediaWiki platform which powers Wikipedia. As a top 10 website, we must meet stringent performance standards while addressing new security challenges such as supporting modern authentication technologies, detecting and preventing platform abuse from bots, and planning and rolling out improvements to our security architecture by defending against emerging security threats.

    Responsibilities
    You are responsible for:

    • Help design and build MediaWiki security capabilities
    • Mentor and lead a security development team
    • Review and deploy security features developed by the Foundation and community members
    • Work with other development teams to ensure that they make safe architectural and implementation choices
    • Perform security maintenance and address technical debt in security-critical components
    • Provide support for application security incidents and operations

    Requirements
    The right person is better than the right set of experiences, these are the traits we’ve identified that make great additions to our team so far:

    • +8 years of experience in the software engineering area with a focus on security
    • Ability to work effectively in a modern, object-oriented PHP code-base
    • Experience developing client-side JavaScript
    • Experience in developing secure software or security-related product features
    • A strong interest in working with a talented security team and learning more specialist security skills such as exploiting and mitigating application-level vulnerabilities
    • Patience in explaining security issues and their implications on privacy and risk to non-technical audiences
    • Sensitivity to the security challenges faced by participants in a large, international project
    • Experience using Linux at the command line for tasks related to web application development and deployment
    • Ability to maintain focus when working remotely

    Additionally, we’d love it if you have:

    • Experience working on anti-abuse mechanisms such as CAPTCHA and bot detection
    • Previous experience building security countermeasures against attacks on technologies at the web, backend, and database level
    • Experience finding and fixing security bugs and reviewing code for security gaps
    • A working knowledge of threat modeling and secure design patterns

    Remuneration

    • The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$129,347 to US$ 200,823 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay.

    Director of Site Reliability Engineering

    Description

    • We are strengthening the team and looking for a Director of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) to lead our staff and ensure teams achieve our goals, towards our mission of providing the essential infrastructure for free knowledge.
    • Wikimedia Foundation’s SRE teams are responsible for ensuring our global top-10 web site Wikipedia, its sister projects and other public facing services are healthy, and for developing its infrastructure, platform and services further in the enablement of Wikimedia Foundation’s mission.
    • The SRE sub-department as a whole comprises over 50 creative and talented staff members who are globally distributed, organized into seven teams each with their own scope and focus area.
    • The role reports to the VP of Site Reliability Engineering & Security.

    Responsibilities

    • Your first priority: Lead multiple SRE teams in keeping Wikimedia’s sites and services (including Wikipedia) running responsively, reliably and securely, including protection against and response to outages, data loss or breaches, and accommodation and implementation of Wikimedia’s Movement Strategy.
    • Your second priority: Partner with engineering teams at Wikimedia to set direction and build platforms enabling transformative changes to Wikimedia’s user experience while ensuring appropriate operational review and support along the way.

    Qualifications

    • 8+ years experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Technical Operations, or similar infrastructure engineering roles
    • 5+ years of experience in people management, leading infrastructure teams responsible for high-traffic websites or large-scale online services
    • Track record of managing, inspiring and mentoring multiple managers and engineers, and aligning them across the organization and in the community
    • Experience with designing and leading engineering team practices and interfacing SRE with other design, product and engineering teams tasked with continuous delivery of functionality
    • Good understanding of infrastructure technologies and architectures at high level, and an ability to lead and challenge engineers in setting technical direction
    • Experience in managing large-scale projects involving high-level application platforms to low-level networking and compute infrastructure
    • Experience developing and tracking department and project budgets
    • Experience in globally distributed, high-traffic environments, preferably with both on-premise bare-metal and cloud based infrastructure
    • Familiarity with open source development and community practices. Experience adopting/integrating open source solutions.
    • Familiarity with large website application architectures including caching layers, storage scaling concepts, network infrastructure, monitoring systems, etc.
    • Ability to travel 2-3 times a year
    • Ability to work flexible hours with an organization spread across several time zones.

    Pluses:

    • A track record of modeling and shaping best community, open source and development practices
    • Experience with highly geographically distributed (remote) teams and follow-the-sun operations is a major plus. Personal cross-cultural experience (having lived, or worked internationally) helps as well.
    • Deep understanding of and hands-on technical expertise in relevant open-source software and infrastructure technologies
    • Experience in negotiation & RFPs for infrastructure & data center service contracts, equipment purchases, peering agreements, SaaS services, etc.

    • The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$172,976 to US$269,298 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay.
