What it includes: As an Open Data Intern, your mission is to find, gather, and synthesise data for our growing portfolio of projects. This includes desk research, data wrangling, data analysis, and some field research activities in Lagos, Nigeria.
Your day-to-day activities could include:
- Creating geospatial datasets from satellite imagery or GPS logs
- Conducting exploratory data analysis to find patterns, trends and anomalies in large datasets
- Producing beautiful, interactive data visualisations
- Conducting on-the-ground data collection and field visits, including conducting brief interviews with relevant members of the public
- Extracting/scraping data from PDF documents, websites, news feeds, and other sources
We are looking for someone who has:
- Availability to begin work in February
- A self-starter attitude and the ability to quickly learn on-the-job, including teaching yourself new skills when needed
- 1-2 years of experience creating and analysing data using tools like Google Sheets (formulas and pivot tables), Python, SQL, QGIS/ArcGIS, PowerBI, Tableau, PDF scraping software, etc.
- Knowledge in statistics and mathematics
- Passion for data visualisation and making data insights easy to understand
- (Preferred) Pidgin and/or Yoruba language skills for local field work in Lagos

The Role
We are looking for a seasoned expert in applied econometrics to lead our analytical solutions on the Stears Insights platform. As the Lead economist (economic modeling), you will guide our team in the conceptualisation and deployment of high-quality analytics solutions that encompass a range of economic and sector-specific models. The ideal candidate will not only be deeply rooted in applied econometrics theory and statistical modeling, but will also ensure the highest standards in our model-building processes.
Key responsibilities:
- Model development and execution: Spearhead the development of econometric models (e.g. VAR, CGE, OLS, DSGE) to forecast macroeconomic and sector-specific indicators (e.g. inflation, FX, GDP)
- Team leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of 2 econometricians/data scientists, ensuring deliverables meet Stears’ rigorous standards
- Collaboration: Work closely with the domain-specific analysts to ensure contextual relevance and accuracy of models
- Quality assurance: Oversee the model validation process, ensuring they align with best practices and industry gold standards
- Stakeholder engagement: Interact with Stears Insights customers to understand their requirements and ensure our analytics solutions meet their needs
- Continuous learning: Stay updated on the latest econometric tools, technqiues, and trends, and ensure they are incorporated into Stears Insights’ methodologies
Required qualifications and experience:

- Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience, with a focus on applied econometrics
- Proven experience in leading teams and mentoring junior staff

The Role
We are looking for an intellectual leader who can lead a team of analysts and collaborate with those from other teams (e.g. our economic modeling team) to generate insightful, market-leading content on Sub-Saharan Africa and help drive our view on the global economy and politics. They will be expected to promote and present our views to improve Stears’ visibility among current and prospective clients, participate in client-facing events, and be credible as a leading voice in internal discussions. The role requires a thorough understanding of major global and Pan-African themes in economics and policy, and the ability to practically apply research and analysis to real-world situations.
The Lead Economist will have strong leadership skills and be able to effectively develop and guide a team. They will need to demonstrate economic skills and be able to convey their knowledge and insight to help drive innovation and outlook quality among the team.
Key responsibilities:
Provide thought leadership and guidance.
- Be an intellectual leader within the insights team, providing timely, market-leading analysis and insight on macroeconomic and industry Pan-African issues.
- Shape and refine the ‘Stears View’ on key economic and sector topics, providing direction and thought leadership.
- Show a strong sense of editorial judgment and ensure adherence to editorial guidelines, including independence, objectivity, and quality
Manage and develop a team of analysts
- Directly manage a team of analysts and research analysts working on Pan-African issues, helping to engender an environment of intellectual challenge and creativity.

Support the promotion of views externally
- Conduct Analyst Briefing engagements with clients on SSA macroeconomy and industry issues.

Required qualifications and experience:
