The Opportunity

The Communications Assistant will support the Brand and Communications Unit in delivering high-quality communications, visibility and documentation support for the Emergency Response Fund project and programme teams in Borno State. The role will contribute to effective social media management, media relations, content gathering, documentation and tracking of communications outputs, while serving as a brand focal point in the Maiduguri office to ensure consistent application of Plan International’s brand, Plan International Nigeria's Brand and Communications Policy, safeguarding and communications standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Communications Advisor and Brand and Communications Unit to implement communications plans for the Emergency Response Fund project and other programme activities in Borno State.
• Gather, draft and organise field content, including human-interest stories, photos, quotes, captions, case studies and programme updates, ensuring informed consent and safeguarding requirements are met.
• Support social media management by developing draft posts, captions, content calendars and visual briefs, and by tracking engagement and performance of published content.
• Assist with media relations activities, including maintaining media contact lists, supporting press engagements, drafting media materials and tracking media coverage.
• Maintain documentation and tracking systems for communications requests, field visits, visibility materials, content approvals, media coverage and project communications outputs.
• Provide brand support to programme teams and partners in Borno State, including reviewing visibility materials, advising on correct logo use and ensuring compliance with Plan International’s brand guidelines.
• Support the development of newsletters, factsheets, briefs, reports, presentations, success stories and other communications products as required.
• Coordinate with field teams to identify communication opportunities, document project achievements and capture evidence of impact for internal and external audiences.
• Ensure all communications activities are conducted in accordance with Plan International’s safeguarding, dignity, consent, data protection and ethical storytelling standards.

Safeguarding

The Communications Assistant shall:

• Commit and contribute to an environment where children and programme participants feel respected, supported, safe and protected.
• Conduct all communications, documentation, photography, videography and media activities in line with Plan International’s safeguarding, consent and ethical storytelling standards.
• Be aware of and adhere to the provisions of the Global Safeguarding Policy and Safeguarding Code of Conduct, including the PII Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse Policy in public and private life.

And ensure that:

• Safeguarding concerns and breaches are reported and responded to in line with Plan International Nigeria’s applicable procedures.
• Programme participants, children and community members are represented with dignity and accuracy in all communications materials.

About You

We are looking to recruit person(s) with;

• A degree or Higher National Diploma in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Development Communication, English, Social Sciences or a related field.
• Completion of NYSC is compulsory.
• At least two years of relevant experience in communications, documentation, media relations, social media management, content gathering or visibility support, preferably in a humanitarian or development context.
• Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to develop clear stories, captions, reports and updates for different audiences.
• Good understanding of photography, videography, consent processes, safeguarding requirements and ethical documentation of children and programme participants.
• Experience supporting social media content development, media monitoring, communications tracking and documentation systems.
• Experience working in Borno State or in humanitarian response settings, including with displaced populations and vulnerable communities.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English and Hausa; knowledge of Kanuri or other local languages spoken in Borno State is an advantage.
• Working knowledge of basic design tools, social media platforms, Microsoft Office applications and simple content management or tracking tools.

The Opportunity

The Safeguarding Intern will work closely with the Country Safeguarding and PSHEA Manager to support monitoring to ensure the Safeguarding Policy, Standards and Procedures are complied with by staff and partners. She/he will provide technical support to Plan’s partners and all Plan’s departments to understand and effectively implement Safeguarding and PSHEA policies and procedures. As a staff member of a child-centred international development and humanitarian organisation, the Safeguarding Intern will commit to upholding Plan International’s standards and policies related to Safeguarding and Gender Equality and Inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

Capacity Building:

• To support the delivery of safeguarding training for staff, associates and visitors to build commitment to Safeguarding in the office and minimize the risk of abuse to children and programme participants.
• Support the development IEC materials on Safeguarding and PSHEA and disseminate these widely.
• To support the Country Safeguarding and PSHEA Manager in carrying out internal regular spot checks to partners and community and annual internal Safeguarding and PSHEA Policies audit.
• Work closely with line manager to provide inputs to all sector programs development in the application of Safeguarding and PSHEA policies and standards in the program cycle based on Safe programming standards in cooperation with all sectors programs team.

Reporting and Responding:

• To act as Safeguarding focal point for the humanitarian response programme and work with Safeguarding focal point at PUs to file the reports on Safeguarding allegations.
• Support the development and disseminate safeguarding reporting and referral pathways.

Mainstreaming:

• To support management in the identification and mitigation of safeguarding risks (including online risks)

Knowledge management and Monitoring:

• To provide a central point for the recording of collated information on Safeguarding and PSHEA Policy implementation activity taking place across the field offices
• To discuss with supervisor any challenges and concerns on the application of Safeguarding and PSHEA policies in order to address them strategically in organization.

About You

We are looking to recruit person(s) with;

• University degree or equivalent in Education, Social Science, Social Work, Psychology, or related fields
• Fresh graduate in a relevant discipline with up to one (1) year of work experience in the development sector, preferably with exposure to safeguarding and PSHEA policies and practices within an INGO/NGO setting.
• Technical skills, experience, and knowledge in protection, GBV, or gender are highly desirable
• Strong writing skills and mature communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-functionally
• Demonstrated sensitivity and ability to maintain confidentiality
• Demonstrated appreciation for a survivor-focused safeguarding approach
• Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication, and networking skills in both remote and in-person contexts
• Knowledge of the Nigerian Child Rights Acts, the VAPP Act, child protection and GBV policies and practice, as well as current issues in relation to safeguarding children and adults in the Nigerian context
• Experience working in emergency settings
• Experience working with IDPs, and other vulnerable populations (ideal)
• Previous experience directly providing services to children at risk and victims of abuse, exploitation, and violence
• Proficiency with MS Office software required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite)
