    Communications Assistant

    The Opportunity

    The Communications Assistant will support the Brand and Communications Unit in delivering high-quality communications, visibility and documentation support for the Emergency Response Fund project and programme teams in Borno State. The role will contribute to effective social media management, media relations, content gathering, documentation and tracking of communications outputs, while serving as a brand focal point in the Maiduguri office to ensure consistent application of Plan International’s brand, Plan International Nigeria's Brand and Communications Policy, safeguarding and communications standards.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the Communications Advisor and Brand and Communications Unit to implement communications plans for the Emergency Response Fund project and other programme activities in Borno State.
    • Gather, draft and organise field content, including human-interest stories, photos, quotes, captions, case studies and programme updates, ensuring informed consent and safeguarding requirements are met.
    • Support social media management by developing draft posts, captions, content calendars and visual briefs, and by tracking engagement and performance of published content.
    • Assist with media relations activities, including maintaining media contact lists, supporting press engagements, drafting media materials and tracking media coverage.
    • Maintain documentation and tracking systems for communications requests, field visits, visibility materials, content approvals, media coverage and project communications outputs.
    • Provide brand support to programme teams and partners in Borno State, including reviewing visibility materials, advising on correct logo use and ensuring compliance with Plan International’s brand guidelines.
    • Support the development of newsletters, factsheets, briefs, reports, presentations, success stories and other communications products as required.
    • Coordinate with field teams to identify communication opportunities, document project achievements and capture evidence of impact for internal and external audiences.
    • Ensure all communications activities are conducted in accordance with Plan International’s safeguarding, dignity, consent, data protection and ethical storytelling standards.

    Safeguarding

    The Communications Assistant shall:

    • Commit and contribute to an environment where children and programme participants feel respected, supported, safe and protected.
    • Conduct all communications, documentation, photography, videography and media activities in line with Plan International’s safeguarding, consent and ethical storytelling standards.
    • Be aware of and adhere to the provisions of the Global Safeguarding Policy and Safeguarding Code of Conduct, including the PII Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse Policy in public and private life.

    And ensure that:

    • Safeguarding concerns and breaches are reported and responded to in line with Plan International Nigeria’s applicable procedures.
    • Programme participants, children and community members are represented with dignity and accuracy in all communications materials.

    About You

    We are looking to recruit person(s) with;

    • A degree or Higher National Diploma in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Development Communication, English, Social Sciences or a related field.
    • Completion of NYSC is compulsory.
    • At least two years of relevant experience in communications, documentation, media relations, social media management, content gathering or visibility support, preferably in a humanitarian or development context.
    • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to develop clear stories, captions, reports and updates for different audiences.
    • Good understanding of photography, videography, consent processes, safeguarding requirements and ethical documentation of children and programme participants.
    • Experience supporting social media content development, media monitoring, communications tracking and documentation systems.
    • Experience working in Borno State or in humanitarian response settings, including with displaced populations and vulnerable communities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Hausa; knowledge of Kanuri or other local languages spoken in Borno State is an advantage.
    • Working knowledge of basic design tools, social media platforms, Microsoft Office applications and simple content management or tracking tools.
