    Kernel Maintenance Engineer - Ubuntu Linux

    Description

    • Ubuntu is the most widely used Linux distribution in the world, and a strong factor in its broad adoption is the security and reliability the Ubuntu Linux kernels provide for their users. 
    • Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has an enduring commitment to not only high quality standards for a distribution upon release, but also to provide ongoing security and maintenance updates for its users for up to 10 years for the Long Term Support (LTS) releases.
    • The Canonical Linux Kernel Team is looking for individuals with a strong sense of determination to provide ongoing support and security updates for the Ubuntu Linux kernels.  These tasks can range anywhere from diagnosing and resolving kernel issues reported by end users to assessing the latest CVE security exploit notifications for impact and integrating a resolution. 
    • Overall, you will be personally responsible for the continual delivery of updates for many of the variations of version, flavor, and architecture of Linux kernel Ubuntu provides.

    Responsibilities
    What your day will look like:

    • Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team 
    • Respond quickly to assess and mitigate security exploits in the Ubuntu Linux kernel
    • Hone your kernel debugging techniques by diagnosing and resolving issues in the kernel reported by customers and the community
    • Master the art of Debian and Snap packaging for Linux kernels
    • Take personal pride in being directly responsible for the integration, packaging, and rigorous testing to deliver updates to millions of consumers worldwide
    • Contribute to the improvement of tooling and automation for the delivery and test of Ubuntu Linux kernels
    • Discover new means to ensure even greater Ubuntu reliability by adding and improving kernel test coverage and delivery process improvements
    • Utilizing a strong understand of git workflows, submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers

    Requirements
    What we are looking for in you:

    • Well-organized, self-starting and able to deliver to fixed schedules
    • Strong commitment to quality processes and documentation standards
    • Demonstrated ability to present oneself in a professional manner when interacting with colleagues, business partners, and the open source community
    • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral
    • Significant programming experience in C

    • Demonstrated experience with operating system kernel patching and debugging

    Additional skills that you might also bring:

    • Significant Python and Bash scripting ability
    • Broad knowledge of the Linux kernel and kernel subsystems
    • Knowledge/experience with Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycle
    • Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging
    • Strong grasp of device drivers, BSP’s, and other low level system engineering
    • Contributed to or even maintained an open source project in the past or present

    Security Software Engineer

    Description

    • This is a general track for security-focused engineering in every team at Canonical, across all levels of seniority. Apply here if you are already an exceptional security-focused software engineer.
    • Most product engineering teams at Canonical include one or two spaces for dedicated security-oriented software engineers. Their role is to challenge the entire team to think more deeply about security.
    • They contribute to the product as engineers too, but their primary focus is to improve security through state of the art practices - from table-top threat model exercises to architecture reviews, from extended security testing with fuzzers and static analysis tools to external security analyst liaison.
    • We also build a number of products that are entirely motivated by security technology and requirements, such as our AppArmor kernel investments and our hardening, compliance and certification toolkits for Ubuntu.
    • As the publisher of Ubuntu we also handle long-term security response and hardening for the entire operating system and open source universe.
    • Working with tens of thousands of upstreams means that we need to be fluent in every major programming language, and design, build and adopt sophisticated tools that enable us to work at scale and speed with confidence.
    • These roles encompass all aspects of product security, including feature development, vulnerability response, proactive security and open source community participation.
    • All security roles interact closely with many of the other Canonical engineering and development teams, Canonical customers and our partners across the open source community.
    • Location: We have open roles for security specialist software engineers in every timezone.

    What you'll do
    Security roles might tackle any of the following:

    • Define, implement and document new security features 
    • Lead security-oriented thinking in a product engineering team
    • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in Canonical and open source Software
    • Contribute to Ubuntu and upstream projects to benefit the community 
    • Audit and analyze source code for vulnerabilities 
    • Integrate new tools in our security infrastructure, pipelines and processes
    • Achieve and retain various security certifications 
    • Extend and enhance Linux cryptographic components - specifically with modules such as OpenSSL/Libgcrypt - with the features and functionality required for country-specific compliance such as FIPS and CC certification 
    • Work with external partners to develop CIS benchmarks
    • Design and develop hardening automation for Ubuntu 
    • Monitor the security industry for new developments 
    • Develop, test and maintain new software capabilities  
    • Provide guidance and support to other engineering teams

    Requirements
    What we are looking for in you:

    • An exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
    • Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path
    • Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations
    • A thorough understanding of the common categories of security vulnerabilities
    • Modern engineering techniques to find and fix them 
    • Familiarity with open source development tools and methodologies 
    • Skill in one or more of C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby or PHP
    • Experience as a security champion
    • Experience driving security within a wider SDLC process 
    • Professional written and spoken English 
    • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)

    Head of OEM Alliances

    Description
    The role of the Global Lead OEM Alliances at Canonical:

    • Large OEM or Independent Hardware Vendor (IHV) brands - Dell, HPE, IBM, Lenovo, Ericsson, Cisco, Fujitsu and many more - are major partners for Canonical. These companies often build software-defined solutions which they take to market, and Ubuntu is a key ingredient in cloud-native and edge or IoT solutions. More and more of those solutions depend on open source. Canonical Ubuntu is the best platform for rapid open source innovation.
    • The Global Lead OEM Alliances is responsible for IHV partner success - we want them to thrive and grow their business with Canonical software, solutions and services. This is a leadership role, responsible for strategic  IHV Alliances worldwide.
    • Reporting to the VP Global Alliances, our IHV Alliance Sales Director will work closely with strategic partners across their complex organizations to engage with their innovation teams and ensure that they consider and integrate Ubuntu stacks and solutions. For example, private clouds, container solutions, and vertical solutions for industries like telco and automotive, are increasingly built on open source and Ubuntu. We are the challenger platform, but we are growing quickly in the industry.
    • The OEM Director is responsible to build trusted relationships with IHV partners, increase Canonical market share and attach rate, evangelize the partnership and lead all business interactions from engineer to CxO. He/she will often run customer workshops focused on particular initiatives at that customer, attend sales events, give public presentations and lead executive engagements.
    • Location: This role can be based remotely in the EMEA or Americas region

    Responsibilities
    What your day will look like:

    • Build strategic relationships with IHV partners at levels
    • Grow their awareness of open source capabilities on Canonical Ubuntu
    • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the Linux and cloud software ecosystem
    • Negotiate contracts and commercial business terms

    • Lead partnerships with global accounts such as IBM, Samsung, DellEMC, HPE, Nokia etc.

    • Travel regularly - sometimes internationally - to drive partnerships in person

    Security Engineer - Ubuntu

    Description

    • This is an exciting opportunity to join an industry leading software security team, and help protect the open source community and Ubuntu users from emerging threats. Canonical is building a team to provide security coverage across a wide range of different ecosystems and environments, and work to make the world a better, safer place.
    • As part of the Ubuntu team, you will work with the best and brightest people in technology to monitor, triage, respond to and document new and existing vulnerabilities in open source software.
    • The role will involve collaboration with internal teams and external partners, to identify and prioritize issues and track progress. 
    • The role can also include a number of other activities, including security assessment and code review, internal tooling developments, community engagement, security hardening and feature development and industry collaboration participation. 
    • This job involves international travel several times a year, usually for one week and requires the ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation.

    What you’ll do

    • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages
    • Keep track of vulnerabilities in Ubuntu releases as they are discovered, researched and fixed (using internal software tools)
    • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu community and with upstream developers where appropriate, to exchange or develop vulnerability patches and make sure that Ubuntu includes the very best security features
    • Audit source code for vulnerabilities
