    Feed & Fodder Technical Officer

    Artificial Insemination Specialist

    ​​​​​​​Job Summary

    • The Feed and Fodder Technical Officer is responsible for overseeing and supporting fodder production activities across project implementation states, working directly with ALDDN Farmers’ Cooperatives and Commercial Fodder Producer (CFPs) timprove cultivation, processing (hay/silage), and management techniques. This role involves hands-on training, capacity building, and promoting best practices in pasture and fodder management tenhance animal feed quality and productivity, and facilitating market linkages for product offtake.

    Key Responsibilities

    Fodder Production Planning and Implementation:

    • Support mapping and identification of suitable fodder plots across the participating state(s).
    • Inspect the identified sites for fodder cultivation, considering climate, soil, and water availability.
    • Conduct field supervision and oversight functions at every stage of the production cycle.
    • Promote cultivation of climate-resilient and high-yield fodder species (e.g., Napier grass, Brachiaria, Stylosanthes, cowpea, etc.).
    • Guide farmers on fodder conservation methods such as silage and haymaking.
    • Support the team in developing the strategic business plan, production plan, work plan, analyzing and reporting technical results, and assisting with upscaling and downscaling of project outputs.
    • Periodic field/farm visits tpromote knowledge sharing, which will eventually enhance the skills of participating farmers in fodder and forage cultivation and management through assistance and vigilance of Private Sector Entrepreneurs (PSE) for fodder in the locality.
    • Any other activity as requested by your direct line supervisor.

    Training and Capacity Building:

    • Train farmers and extension workers on best practices in fodder production, storage, and utilization.
    • Develop training materials and organize field days for participating cooperative farmers and CFPs.

    Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

    • Monitor the progress of implementation of activities at the field level.
    • Collect timely data on yield, adoption rates, and impact on livestock productivity and economics of production.
    • Prepare periodic field reports and participate in review meetings.

    Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Facilitate input supply (seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, etc.) and link farmers tmarkets or livestock owners needing fodder.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agronomy, or related field (a diploma with strong field experience may be considered).
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in fodder production, livestock extension, or rural agriculture programs.
    • Familiarity with the agricultural landscape and pastoral systems in Northern Nigeria.
    • Experience working with rural communities and smallholder farmers.
    • Knowledge of local languages (e.g., Hausa, Fulfulde) is a strong advantage.

    Skills and Competencies:

    • Strong practical knowledge of forage and pasture management.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability twork independently in rural and semi-arid environments.
    • Basic data collection and reporting skills (Excel, mobile survey tools, etc.).
    • Commitment timproving rural livelihoods and livestock resilience.

    Artificial Insemination Officer

    Job Summary:

    • The Artificial Insemination Officer is responsible for implementing and monitoring artificial insemination activities across project implementation states to ensure success and support the ALDDN farmer cooperatives and other selected integrated farms participating in the artificial insemination intervention.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Artificial Insemination Planning and Implementation:

    • Assist in identifying and evaluating prospective AI farmers/Integrated farms to ensure adherence to selection criteria across the participating state(s).
    • Support the artificial insemination lead in the sensitization of the farmers/integrated farms on artificial insemination intervention.
    • Conduct field supervision and oversight functions at every stage of AI intervention.
    • Support in the procurement of A.I inputs such as hormones, semen, liquid nitrogen and other A.I inputs.
    • Support pregnancy diagnosis of artificially inseminated cows
    • Oversee the artificially inseminated cows to ensure pregnancy retention and high calving rate.
    • Support training and capacity building of Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs) and participating farmers.
    • Periodic field/farm visits to promote knowledge sharing, which will eventually enhance the skills of participating farmers in the management of the artificially inseminated cows and the calves that will be calved.
    • Any other activity as requested by your direct line supervisor.

    Training and Capacity Building:

    • Train participating farmers on good husbandry practices and facilitate the training of trainer sessions for Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs) on critical topics such as synchronisation, insemination, semen handling, business development etc.

    Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

    • Monitor the progress of activity implementation at the field level.
    • Collect timely data on the number of cows inseminated, cow ID/Tag No, the insemination dates, expected calving dates etc.
    • Prepare periodic field reports and participate in review meetings.

    Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Facilitate input supply (semen, hormones, liquid nitrogen)
    • Engagement with the artificial insemination service providers.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or related field (a diploma with strong field experience may be considered).
    • Minimum of 2 years of field experience in artificial insemination implementation, livestock extension services, or rural agriculture programs.
    • Familiarity with the agricultural landscape and pastoral systems in Northern Nigeria.
    • Experience working with rural communities and smallholder farmers.

    Analyst

    Job Description:

    In this role, you will be required to fulfil the following primary responsibilities:

    • Research the national and international markets, industries, and companies to identify trends and opportunities to inform program implementation and track results.
    • Prepare presentations, reports, and other materials summarizing research and analyses and developing recommendations for program implementation
    • Communicate findings and recommendations to the program management office clearly and concisely.
    • Create a complete bibliography and contacts list of all research information sources.
    • Support the program teams with work required to deliver high-quality final reports to clients.
    • Work independently but as part of a broader team of Sahel Consulting and its implementing partners.
    • Support senior management on other Sahel Consulting initiatives as requested

    Environmental and Climate Change Experts

    Project Scope 

    • The RISE (Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable Economies) project, funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), is a five-year initiative aimed at promoting climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. The project will be implemented by MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates) in partnership with Sahel Consulting Agriculture and Nutrition Ltd. Together, the two organizations will work to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs within the Rice, Maize, Groundnut and Soybean value chains, particularly women and youth in Bauchi, Kaduna and Kano states. The initiative aligns with Canada’s aim to address gender equality, human rights, and environmental sustainability throughout its implementation.

    Overview

    • The Environmental and Climate Change Expert will provide strategic and technical leadership on environmental sustainability and climate-resilient agriculture interventions within the RISE Program. This role will focus on integrating climate-smart practices into program design and implementation, supporting environmental assessments, and ensuring compliance with donor and national environmental guidelines.

    Role Responsibilities

    Program Design and Integration

    • Lead the integration of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and environmental sustainability strategies into program planning and implementation.
    • Identify and promote context-specific climate adaptation and mitigation measures for smallholder farmers, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders.
    • Develop and oversee the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and related safeguards.

    Technical Advisory and Capacity Building

    • Provide ongoing technical guidance to the program team, partners, and beneficiaries on sustainable land use, natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation.
    • Support the design and delivery of training modules and capacity-building sessions on CSA, environmental conservation, and climate risk management.
    • Advise on environmental impact considerations across agricultural practices, agro-input use, waste management, and infrastructure.

    Monitoring, Compliance, and Reporting

    • Ensure compliance with environmental and climate-related donor requirements, including those of Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
    • Develop and implement tools to monitor the project's environmental indicators and climate-related risks.
    • Prepare timely and high-quality reports on environmental and climate activities, outcomes, and lessons learned.

    Stakeholder Engagement and Policy Support

    • Engage with national and sub-national environmental agencies, climate experts, and technical working groups.
    • Support policy advocacy efforts related to climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and green financing.
    • Represent Sahel in climate-related forums and contribute to building strategic partnerships in the climate and environment space.

    Role Requirements

    • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field.
    • At least 5 years of experience in implementing environmental or climate-related programs, preferably within the agriculture or rural development sectors.
    • Strong understanding of climate-smart agriculture, ESG standards, and environmental compliance frameworks 
    • Demonstrated experience conducting environmental risk assessments and developing mitigation plans.
    • Excellent report writing, stakeholder coordination, and facilitation skills.

    Desirable:

    • Experience working with donor-funded projects.
    • Familiarity with gender-sensitive climate resilience approaches and inclusive environmental programming.
    • Experience with tools like GIS, remote sensing, or climate risk modelling is an asset.
