Role Responsibilities

• We are looking for a creative and experienced video journalist with an excellent understanding of what makes brilliant digital journalism.  In this role you will work creatively across all digital platforms – video, audio and text – to ensure that the Pidgin service output grows a distinctive character and status in its target area. You will offer story ideas and will routinely self-shoot and edit news packages for use across multiple platforms. You will be required occasionally to do some field reporting.

• The successful candidate will have experience within a media environment.

You will also command the following attributes:

• Fluent in Pidgin and English (written and spoken)
• Must have experience of delivering creative output to online digital platforms, recognising the distinct requirements of different types of output.
• Ability to self-shoot and edit video routinely which is the main focus of the role
• Knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential.
• You will have knowledge of and recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
• Ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.

Role Responsibilities

• We are recruiting for an experienced Senior Journalist to work across the Pidgin Service digital output – specifically the website and social media platforms.
• You will take full editorial responsibility for the timely delivery of daily output.
• Reporting to the Editor, your main responsibilities will include: leading on the production, creative and timely distribution of all digital content, videos, and innovative editorial projects to serve our Pidgin audiences.
• The SJ will also bear in mind the need to adhere to the BBC's editorial guidelines and objectives.
• In addition, you will be responsible for coming up with creative and innovative ways of developing, pitching and telling stories through text and video.
• You must have work authorisation for Nigeria.

Are you the Right Candidate?

• Fluency and up to date knowledge of Pidgin and the ability to type quickly and accurately.
• Fluency in English, written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
• A demonstrable track record of growing social media platforms and engaging with audiences.
• A deep understanding of Search Engine Optimization.
• Familiarity with digital news production on websites and social media platforms.
• A willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.
• Ability to mentor, lead and inspire journalists to bring out the best in them.
• Decent experience with presentation of live and recorded programs.
• A willingness to understand and adopt BBC Editorial Guidelines (especially as regards conflict of interest) and to abide by BBC Values.
