    Backend Software Engineer

    About the Role

    • Branch launched in Nigeria in 2017 and has seen rapid adoption and growth. We plan to grow our engineering team in Nigeria significantly.
    • As part of this team, you will work closely with our global engineering team (distributed across three continents) to strengthen the capabilities of our existing product and build out new products for Branch.
    • Example projects include: Building new functionality for our Credit and Wallet products; helping improve the reliability of our core payments and banking systems; architecting data pipelines and machine learning models for credit underwriting; and more.

    Here are some things you'll do

    • Build out backend functionality for existing and new product lines such as Credit, Wallet, Bill Pay, and others.
    • Integrate with various third-party systems, including payment systems, identity providers, and messaging platforms.
    • Scale our backend services and pipelines to ever-growing levels of traffic and complexity.
    • Help build flexible and easy-to-use tools used by our operations teams to handle customer inquiries and other business processes.

    Minimum Requirements

    • You have strong experience (4+ years) in building backend software for web-based or mobile products.
    • You are an excellent collaborator and communicator. You listen to others and seek to understand, but aren’t afraid to speak your mind and debate respectfully when you disagree. 
    • You are excited by the prospect of working in a distributed team and company with teammates from all over the world.

    • You have a solid foundation in computer science fundamentals, distributed systems, data storage, and agile development methodologies.
    • You are pragmatic and combine a strong understanding of technology and product needs to find the best solution for a problem.
    • You are highly entrepreneurial and thrive in taking ownership of your own impact. You proactively identify problems and propose solutions.

    Product Manager

    Job Overview

    • As part of this team, you will work closely with our global engineering team (distributed across three continents) to strengthen the capabilities of our existing product and build out new products for Branch.
    • Example projects include: Building new functionality for our Credit, Wallet, and Investment products; improving the reliability of our core payments and banking systems; researching new product ideas and bringing them to market.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead the entire lifecycle of development for one area of the Branch product. This encompasses everything from researching new features and creating detailed specs, to triaging bugs, to managing the team’s workflow, to shipping deliverables on time.
    • Work closely with our engineering and operational teams to triage bugs and set high-level quarterly milestones.
    • Draw insights from user research, experiments, and industry trends to set the team strategy and prioritize projects that sustainably grow our customer base and drive the adoption of new products.
    • Set ambitious goals for yourself and our team. Manage workflow to ship deliverables on time.
    • Evaluate, initiate, and manage partnerships with third party vendors to help Branch achieve our product roadmap.
    • Work closely with the engineering, design, marketing, and analytics teams across our global offices to grow our customer base through conversion rate optimization, retention, and re-engagement initiatives.

    Qualifications

    • You have 3+ years of experience in product management with demonstrated ability to lead technical teams. Prior experience with a high-growth consumer software product or in a growth-focused role is a plus.
    • You have demonstrated the ability to manage projects, bring clarity to ambiguous questions, and chart a path forward.
    • You have proven intuition and skills for designing world-class customer experiences through well-honed user research techniques and mock ups.
    • You have top-notch analytical abilities including some familiarity with SQL. You measure initiatives quantitatively, and you draw actionable insights to guide decisions.
    • You are creative and have a track record of testing and launching new ideas.
    • You know that startups are a team sport. You listen to others, speak your mind, and ask the right questions. You are a great collaborator and teacher. Effective written communication skills and the ability to work with remote teams are essential.
    • You are eager to learn new skills, solve complex problems, and work closely with diverse teams, including Design and Engineering. 
    • You are resourceful. You know how to do more with less, and you’ve worked on lean teams that have had a large impact. You are not afraid of big challenges, and you do whatever it takes to get the job done.
