In 1988, a Task force under the chairmanship of Professor Ibrahim H. Umar - former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano - was constituted and submitted report in February 1989 recommending the establishment of the University at Bagauda Lake Hotel. Subsequently, a Technical Committee was inaugurated in July 1989 under the chairmanship of Alhaji Abdulkarim Hassan to study in details, the report submitted by Task Force. Consequent upon this, approval was granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the State to establish a University in 1991. In the same year, an eleven (11) member implementation committee headed by Prof. Ibrahim H. Umar was appointed and assigned the responsibility for the smooth take-off of the University. However, due to technical and insufficient fund, Government suspended the idea. In January 2000, a committee was constituted on the revival of establishing the University by Kano State Executive Governor, Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso under the chairmanship of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje where the committee recommended for immediate revisiting of the project. Government then, constituted an eleven (11) member implementation committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta to realize the take-off of the University. By April 2001, the University commenced academic activities with 88 students, and two (2) Faculties namely Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (FAAAT) and Faculty of Science and Science Education (FASSE). In 2002/2003 academic session, two (2) additional Faculties were mounted. They were: Faculty of Environmental Sciences Faculty of Engineering Similarly, in 2011/2012 academic session, an additional Faculty namely:- Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences was established with additional programmes such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Geology, Urban and Regional Planning and Science Education. Presently, the University runs twenty two (22) programmes in five (5) different Faculties with a population of 12,893 students.
