- About Ekobits
Lagos is the largest city in Africa, it has wall-to-wall people, bumper-to-bumper cars, noise and pollution beyond belief. Well that’s one way to look at it. To me Lagos is a famous and glittering city, abundant in natural beauty and surrounded by sea, with its diverse culture, happy-go-lucky attitude.
Lagos cools your ego and offers you the chance to compete. This year I’ve been fortunate to come here twice, first in may for a co-creation workshop of the new Bits school in the family and the past week during the start of the said shool. Step forward EkoBits! EkoBits is an youth empowering venture that is the brainchild of a Work in Progress alliance.
The alliance consists of organisations such as Oxfam Novib, Venture Capital for Africa, ButterflyWorks and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). ButterflyWorks; a social and innovations studio in the Netherlands partnered and set up Nairobits in Nairobi, Kenya in 1999 and has since been involved in springing up bits school around the world. Poise Nigeria being the host organisation that all this was made possible.
EKoBits a free ICT and digital design school with core mandate to improve the lives of youth from underprivileged backgrounds and slums through technology, entrepreneurial, creative and life skills in order to provide more employment opportunities for youth, this project targets the dynamic and fast growing ICT sector.
The launch was as exciting and thrilling as the training is envisioned to be. The first class, their communities leaders and parents were in attendance . The Venue was a Poise’s compound in Pinnock Beach Estate, Lekki where the school is also located.
I’d like to appreciate everyone who has made this possible. You only hav to speak to any of the fortune 50 students and they’ll tell you how this is beyond their dreams. Hopefully the inspire a generation in the same way the other Bits schools have in the years.
