    University Librarian

    • The University Librarian is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the administration of the Library Services of the University and for all other matters relating to the University Library.

    The Person

    • The University Librarian is a Principal Officer of the University. Candidates for the post must be visionary, possess personal integrity, demonstrate transparency in both private and public life, and have the proven ability to provide effective leadership and command the respect and loyalty of the staff of the University.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Candidates must:

    • possess a Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related discipline from a recognised University. Possession of a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline shall be an added advantage;
    • be registered with the Librarians' Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) and be a member of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA);
    • possess sound knowledge of modern library management, including computer applications for the administration of a contemporary university library, strategic planning, staff management, copyright and intellectual property, financial management and other relevant competencies;
    • possess at least fifteen (15) years' cognate experience in university library services;
    • possess substantial scholarly publications in reputable national and international journals.
    • In addition, candidates must not be below the rank of Deputy Librarian and must have served in that rank for at least three (3) years.

    Duties

    The duties of the University Librarian shall include:

    • Collecting, organising and preserving adequate and relevant library resources;
    • Ensuring the continuous professional development of library staff;
    • Administering the approved library budget and rendering appropriate returns on fund utilisation;
    • Ensuring compliance with the regulations of the Librarians' Registration Council of Nigeria;
    • Ensuring that the University Library is automated, digitalised, networked and integrated into national and international information networks;
    • Promoting inter-library cooperation and resource sharing;
    • Generating internally generated revenue for the Library in accordance with University policies;
    • Managing the human resources of the Library;
    • Preparing the Library's annual budget;
    • Procuring and organising teaching, learning and research resources in consultation with the Faculties, Departments and other academic units;
    • Procuring stationery and other materials required for library operations;
    • Providing bibliographic instruction and user education services;
    • Providing circulation and reprographic services;
    • Providing current awareness services through library bulletins, accession lists, displays and exhibitions;
    • Providing information and reference services;
    • Promoting outreach and community engagement services;
    • Ensuring users have effective access to library resources;
    • Ensuring prudent financial management of the Library;
    • Facilitating access to scholarly information in support of teaching, learning and research; and
    • Promoting staff research and scholarly publications.
