Technical Officer, Media and Communications at FHI 360

The Technical Officer Media and Communications will support the design and delivery of high-quality internal and external communications. Reporting to the Grants and Communications Coordinator, the role will focus on creating compelling content including photos, videos, publications, and digital media while ensuring consistent branding and messaging. The officer will contribute to donor visibility, program documentation, and public engagement, enhancing FHI 360’s profile and that of its partners in Northeast Nigeria.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Support media and communications strategy development by contributing to the design, planning, and implementation of internal and external communications strategies in alignment with FHI 360’s humanitarian response priorities, donor requirements, and organizational brand positioning.
• Produce high-quality visual and written content including photos, videos, success stories, fact sheets, press releases, human-interest features, and social media posts that showcase project achievements and amplify the voices of affected populations.
• Design and develop donor-compliant visibility materials such as banners, brochures, fliers, newsletters, presentations, and reports, ensuring adherence to USAID, FHI 360, and other donor branding and marking guidelines.
• Manage and curate graphic and multimedia content for digital and print use, ensuring that materials are visually engaging, accessible to diverse audiences, and optimized for multiple platforms, including websites and social media channels.
• Document project activities and impact stories through regular field visits, capturing high-quality photographs, video footage, and beneficiary testimonials to illustrate program outcomes and humanitarian impact.
• Provide publicity and promotional support for organizational events, donor visits, awareness campaigns, press briefings, and community outreach activities by preparing media kits, talking points, and event coverage materials.
• Strengthening digital presence and engagement by developing content calendars, monitoring online platforms, tracking analytics, and recommending improvements for audience reach and engagement.
• Collaborate with consortium partners, technical leads, and program teams to ensure consistent, accurate, and compelling messaging across all ongoing projects in Northeast Nigeria, including joint visibility initiatives and communications campaigns.
• Support localization of communication products by coordinating translation, cultural adaptation, and layout of IEC materials into Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, and other relevant local languages to enhance community-level engagement.
• Contribute to capacity strengthening of project and partner staff through on-the-job coaching or short training sessions on communications standards, photography, storytelling, and branding compliance.
• Maintain media and donor relations by drafting press releases, supporting media coverage of key events, and assisting in cultivating positive relationships with journalists, photographers, and local influencers.
• Ensure compliance with ethical standards for media and communications by safeguarding the dignity, privacy, and rights of beneficiaries when collecting and disseminating stories, photos, and videos.
• Maintain an organized media archive (photos, videos, publications, designs) with proper metadata and usage rights, ensuring materials are easily retrievable for donor reporting and institutional knowledge management.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Grants and Communications Coordinator, including surge support for reporting and documentation during peak activity periods.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

• Communications expertise: Strong knowledge of principles, methods, and practices in communications, media relations, graphic design, digital storytelling, journalism, and public relations.
• Humanitarian communications: Understanding of humanitarian and development programming, including sensitivity to conflict-affected contexts and the ethical considerations of working with vulnerable populations.
• Branding and compliance: Strong understanding of FHI 360, US Department of State, and other donor branding, marking, and visibility requirements, with the ability to ensure consistent adherence across all communications outputs.
• Content creation skills: Demonstrated ability to develop engaging written, visual, and multimedia content tailored for diverse audiences, including donors, stakeholders, partners, and community members.
• Photography and videography: Advanced skills in photo and video production using professional cameras and mobile devices, including editing, subtitling, and preparing materials for multi-platform dissemination.
• Graphic design and layout: Proficiency in design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Corel Draw, Canva, Microsoft Publisher, etc.) for producing high-quality publications, infographics, and digital graphics.
• Digital engagement: Strong skills in social media management (content scheduling, community engagement, and analytics) and ability to optimize content for web and mobile platforms.
• Information management: Ability to maintain organized archives of media assets (photos, videos, reports, IEC materials) with metadata and clear usage rights.
• Analytical and reporting skills: Ability to collect and interpret communication metrics, track media coverage, and prepare periodic reports to demonstrate visibility outcomes.
• Interpersonal skills: Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with program teams, consortium partners, journalists, and community stakeholders.
• Capacity building: Ability to train and mentor colleagues and partners on branding, storytelling, photography, and communications best practices.
• Multicultural awareness: Sensitivity to cultural and gender differences, with the ability to adapt communications approaches to diverse audiences.
• Languages: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Hausa, Kanuri, and Shuwa is highly desirable.
• Technical proficiency: Skilled in operating word processing, design, and publishing software; video editing software (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve); and basic web development tools (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is an advantage.
• Personal attributes: Self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work under pressure with minimal supervision, and capable of managing multiple tasks and competing deadlines.

Qualifications and Requirements

• BS/BA in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, Graphic Design, or a related field with 5–7 years of relevant experience.
• Or MS/MA in a related field with 3–5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience working with NGOs or within humanitarian programs is required.
• Familiarity with the Nigerian public health and humanitarian systems is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to succeed in multicultural environments.
