Specialist, Design at IHS Towers

The Opportunity

• We are expanding our global footprint and seeking an individual to join our team as Specialist, Design in Nigeria.
• The individual will assist in performing standard checks on designs for site audits, Build to Suit (BTS) sites, and upgrade sites in line with required specifications and standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform Technical Site Survey (TSS) design analysis and communicate results to the vendor to generate design drawing. Also enter the results in the Design Analysis Tracker database.
• Notify the warehouses to source alternative towers from vendors.
• Conduct preliminary analyses of upgrade requests. Determine if site visits are required based on the preliminary analyses.
• Perform site evaluation and proffer solutions to issues identified during site visits.
• Develop scope of work (SOW) for BTS and upgrade projects for review by the Senior Specialist, Design.
• Ensure approved designs are archived.
• Liaise with Supply Chain to select vendors. Analyze existing structures (poles, truss towers, guyed towers, etc.) for lateral and vertical loads and determine overall capacity of a given structure.
• Prepare report packages justifying design requirements or engineering decisions under the project SOW.
• Convey engineered decisions to clients, co-workers, architects, engineers, and other personnel in a clear and comprehensible manner.
• Produce drawings (AutoCAD) pertaining to the installation, construction, or modification of tower structures.
• Carry out site research to develop construction drawings or other information needed for the design and analysis of a given project.
• Prepare construction drawings (site plans, equipment plans, elevations, sections, details, etc.) utilizing AutoCAD
• Gather field data to be used for calculations and transferring the data to construction drawings for use by others.
• Analyse TSS documents and Soil Test reports to generate and secure approval for design drawings.
• Analyze tower manufacturers’ foundation designs to actualize the best foundations for sites based on their terrains.
• Evaluate and analyze submitted site design drawings before final approval.
• Approve designed drawings as submitted by the contractors.
• Carry out first-stage approval of Bill of Quantities (BoQ) submitted by subcontractors before approval by the Senior Specialist, Design.
• Make expert decisions on remedial work for towers.
• Carry out tower antenna loading spot checks as required.
• Upgrade space checks on sites for additional customers.
• Provide technical advice on design to contractors, internal teams across Technical, and the Fibre and Rural Telephony team.
• Promote communication between colleagues for the benefit of information flow and to curb any problems that may arise.
• Prepare and submit reports to the Senior Specialist, Design on all matters pertaining to job area
• Manage relationships with partners/vendors.
• Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Senior Specialist, Design.

Key Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering or related discipline.
• Professional Certification, e.g. PMP and / or PRINCE2, will be an asset.
• +5-7 years’ relevant experience in the telecoms industry
