    Secondary School Educator

    Responsibilities: 

    Planning and Preparation For Learning:

    • Lesson/engagement/material/differentiation: ensure lesson plans are planned before the beginning of a term showing differentiation in the class.
    • Ensure lessons are planned to show how learners would be engaged using appropriate materials.
    • Materials for lesson delivery MUST be available before the lesson commences.
    • Knowledge: ensure you give feedback monthly from research on child development and how students learn. 

    Standards:

    • Lesson plan: ensure all lesson plans follow the ‘’VAK’’ format
    • All lesson plans must have a bible passage (biblical integration) as a starter that correlates with the lesson and reference must be made to the passage (moral or story) at intervals.
    • Before the start of any lesson, the objectives of the lesson must be clearly stated/ displayed on the board and instructional materials/ learning aids readily available/ displayed in class.
    • NB: No lesson should be taught without the use of instructional materials/ learning aids.
    • Educators must have video clips already downloaded before the lesson and worksheets available in the desired quantity as photocopies during lesson periods would not be accepted.
    • All lessons must be related to real-life experience and application.
    • Resumption tests must be planned with the Class Educator and administered at the beginning of each term and properly documented. Formative assessments during lesson deliveries must be documented to ascertain the learner’s progress.
    • Assessment policy: ALL (Examination=40marks, Brain teaser =30marks, Case study = 10marks, End of Unit assessment task = 10marks, and class work 10marks), Integrated project and field trip plans must be turned in at the beginning of the term alongside lesson plans. Further details on the assessment format are contained in the assessment policies of various departments.

    Environment:

    • Classroom displays should be in line with class themes and classrooms must be orderly at all times.
    • Risk assessment should be carried out before each lesson alongside with educator.(outdoor and indoor).
    • The classroom must be clean and neat at all times
    • Workspaces and learners' offices including books must be in order.

    Classroom Management:

    • Responsibilities/Expectations: Educators should get learners to be self-disciplined and both learners    (where applicable) and educators will take responsibility for their actions. 
    • Working with the class educators, class rules should be clearly stated/ displayed in class and learners encouraged and guided to follow them adequately.
    • Set goals for each learner with the class educator and have a learning journal. Track learners' progress with educators’ commonplace books. (N/B: educators would be required to discuss learners’ progress with evidence and facts using the commonplace book and learning journals first with their supervisors before parents’ conferences)
    • All learners are expected to behave in an orderly manner, use the proper diction in communication, be properly dressed at all times, and be groomed to always greet, use magic words, and observe grace and courtesy.
    • Educators/co-educators and assistants are expected to maintain peace and tranquillity in the classroom that would translate to the school environment at large (Learners are not expected to run, shout and bully within the school premises).
    • Routines/Efficacy
    • Work with the class educators to ensure class routines are clearly stated on glass walls. 
    • Routine covers; circle time, toileting, feeding/break/play time, and lesson time/stations.
    • Learners must be accompanied to the restroom in the Early Years and a pass given to Grade learners before leaving the class. 
    • NB: on no account should learners be seen loitering within the school premises. This is highly unacceptable. 
    • Time table should be followed strictly.
    • The transition should be well planned for with class educators.
    • Reflection time should be observed before the close of school.
    • Closing prayer should be observed daily.
    • Relationship/respect/socio-emotional behavior
    • Educators must have good relationships with all learners without favoritism. 
    • All learners should be treated with respect and never talked down on.

    Incentive/preventive/repertoire:

    • The educator should have plans for the use of positive incentives (stickers, claps, words of affirmation), etc.
    • Educators are expected to be alert at all times, vigilant, and sensitive at all times. They will be held responsible for their classes.
    • Responsibilities; Educators should be able to have a firm grip/control of their class.
    • Delivery of instruction
    • Expectations/Goals: educator should clearly state learning objectives before and during lesson delivery.
    • Lessons should be delivered using clear and concise terms.
    • All lessons must be differentiated and learners engaged at all times.
    • All lessons must have real-life applications 
    • All learners must be approached with the right mindset (use of the right words)

    Family/community outreach

    • An educator is expected to show respect to all families and community cultures.
    • Shows each parent an in-depth knowledge of their child 
    • NB: no assistant educator is expected to speak with parents without the knowledge of the class educator.
    • An educator is expected to give parents clear, user-friendly learning and behavior expectations and exemplars of proficient work.
    • An educator is expected to make sure parents hear positive news about their children first and immediately flag any problems.
    • An educator is expected to frequently involve parents in supporting and enriching the curriculum for their children as it unfolds.
    • An educator is expected to assign highly engaging homework, get close to a 100% return, and promptly provide help and feedback.
    • An educator is expected to deal immediately and successfully with parent concerns and make parents feel welcome at any time.
    • An educator is expected to use student-led conferences, report cards, and informal talks to give parents detailed and helpful feedback on children’s progress.
    • An educator is expected to succeed in contacting and working with all parents, including those who are hard to reach.
    • An educator is expected to successfully enlist classroom volunteers and extra resources from homes and the community to enrich the curriculum

    Requirements:

    • Minimum academic qualification of a  B.ed (subject) TRCN)
    • The staff should be able to teach all Technical aspects and have the following:
    • Understanding curriculum requirements, and creating syllabi, lesson plans, and educational content that satisfy these requirements.
    • Analyzing the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of students and structuring lessons and assessments around them.
    • Adjusting teaching methods to suit different groups of learners.
    • Creating engaging, stimulating lesson plans and asking frequent questions to make sure students are on track.
    • Reporting any progress issues to the head of the department, as well as the parents.
    • Attending meetings, training sessions, workshops, conferences, and other continuing education initiatives.
