    Program Officer

    Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building non-governmental organization (NGO). Global Rights was founded in Washington DC, USA in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group and changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 at its 25th anniversary. Global Rights works with local activists in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations. We provide technical assistance and training to enable local partners document and expose human rights abuses, conduct community outreach and mobilization, advocate for legal and policy reform, and provide legal and paralegal services.

    The Program Officer will be responsible for leading the organization's advocacy efforts on a range of policy issues around legislative advocacy and Civic space strengthening

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    Advocacy and Policy Development

    • Developing and implementing advocacy strategies to advance the Global Rights thematic areas (Civic space strengthening, Security and human rights, business and human rights, and equitable resource governance).
    • Building and maintaining relationships with elected officials and other key stakeholders.
    • Monitoring legislative developments and providing updates to relevant stakeholders.
    • Conducting research and analysis to inform advocacy positions and initiatives.
    • Representing the organization at meetings with elected officials, coalitions, and other stakeholders.
    • Developing and delivering advocacy/human rights training and resources to stakeholders and partner NGOs in project states.
    • Collaborating with other advocacy organizations and coalitions to advance common policy goals.
    • Developing and implementing human rights programs and initiatives in line with Global Rights' strategy.
    • Conducting research and analysis to inform program design and advocacy efforts.
    • Building and maintaining relationships with human rights activists, communities, and other stakeholders.
    • Monitoring human rights abuses and advocating for the protection of human rights in the region.
    • Representing the organization at meetings with governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders.

    Civic Space Strengthening and Legislative Support

    • Monitoring and advocating for the protection of civic space in Nigeria and Africa.
    • Building and maintaining relationships with elected officials and other key stakeholders.
    • Monitoring legislative developments and providing updates to relevant stakeholders.
    • Representing the organization at meetings with elected officials, coalitions, and other stakeholders.
    • Developing and implementing human rights programs and initiatives in line with Global Rights' strategy.
    • Building and maintaining relationships with human rights activists, communities, and other stakeholders.
    • Monitoring human rights abuses and advocating for the protection of human rights in the region.
    • Representing the organization at meetings with governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders.

    Capacity Building and Communications

    • Managing and implementing capacity building and advocacy projects
    • Overseeing preparation, submission and evaluation of regular work plans and activity reports, and providing expert technical assistance and mentoring to partners’ daily activities
    • Collaborating with Executive Director/supervisor to elaborate strategic planning and design annual work plans based on assessments and partner consultations to build the capacity of grassroots organizations to promote and advocate human rights in Nigeria.
    • Collaborating with Executive Director/supervisor to design and facilitate trainings and other capacity building program activities for local NGOs and communities
    • Collaborating with Executive Director/supervisor to design, research, write and edit practical publications for wide distribution to stakeholders
    • Providing the Communications Unit with content for social media and other external communication platforms
    • Collaborating with Executive Director/supervisor to administer and monitor sub-grant programs to partner organizations

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as public policy, political science, or law.
    • A minimum of 5 years of experience in policy and legislative advocacy or a related field.
    • Strong understanding of the legislative process and advocacy strategies.
    • Track record in successfully leading legislative advocacy efforts.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to effectively build and maintain relationships with elected officials and other stakeholders.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
