    The Gender Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) in Nigeria (based in the IITA HQ) will be involved in the implementation of the new One CGIAR Harnessing Gender and Social Equality for Resilience in Agri-Food Systems (HER+) Initiative. The first business cycle of HER+ is from April 2022 to March 2025. The PDF will coordinate and assist in the implementation of both qualitative and quantitative work on the HER+ Initiative in Nigeria. The PDF will work on Work Package 1 (WP1) of HER+ Initiative, which will specifically carry out research to understand normative constraints that restrict women’s abilities to build economic resilience in the face of climate change challenges and design and pilot gender transformative approaches.

    In executing the research, the PDF will collaborate with other researchers outside of IITA who are on the WP1 of the HER+ Initiative and work under the supervision of IITA Senior Gender Scientist, Dr. Steven Cole, who is the WP1 Lead. The PDF will participate in all stages of the research in the HER+ Initiative, including design, preparation, data collection, data analysis, and reporting/writing up of science outputs. The PDF will also attend and/or contribute to presentations of research findings at conferences, workshops, and take advantage of certain training opportunities, as assigned.

    Position Responsibilities

    The PDF will:

    • Contribute to or lead in the development of research design, including the development and piloting of research tools.
    • Offer necessary trainings and capacity building to research assistants and enumerators, and partners as necessary.
    • Support and/or supervise qualitative and quantitative data collection to ensure that the highest data quality standards are met.
    • Clean and analyze qualitative and quantitative data using statistical software.
    • Coordinate field research activities with colleagues and support staff involved in the HER+ Initiative with strategic stakeholders such as local government, and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Contribute to and lead the production and publication of high-quality research reports, communication products (e.g., blogs), and peer-reviewed journal articles for dissemination to the wider research community.
    • Mentor/assist with the supervision of gender research assistants as needed.
    • Contribute to resource mobilization through the development of gender (and youth) focused concept notes and proposals.
    • Undertake any other job-related duties as assigned by the IITA Senior Gender Scientist.

    Education Qualifications

    The candidate should possess a Ph.D. in Social Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology, Development Studies, Gender Studies, or other relevant fields from a highly recognized university with at least three years of prior field research experience.

    • Excellent command of both qualitative and quantitative data analysis software.
    • Demonstrated experience in participatory, gender action learning, and/or gender transformative research approaches.
    • Demonstrated field research experience in an international agricultural research for development focused project or program.
    • Evidence of the ability to publish in peer-review journals.
    • Proficient in English.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team in a cross-cultural environment.

    Duty Station: IITA-Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria.
