    Intern

    Background

    • As a service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development and international education work, we are dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world.
    • GIZ has over 50 years of experience in a wide variety of areas, including economic development and employment promotion, energy and the environment, and peace and security.
    • The diverse expertise of our federal enterprise is in demand around the globe - from the German Government, European Union institutions, the United Nations, the private sector and governments of other countries.
    • We work with businesses, civil society actors and research institutions, fostering successful interaction between development policy and other policy fields and areas of activity.
    • Our main commissioning party is the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn. In 2019, we generated a business volume of around EUR 3.1 billion. Our 22,199 employees, almost 70 per cent of whom are national staff, work in around 120 countries.
    • As a recognised development service provider, we currently have 556 development workers in action in partner countries.
    • Furthermore, in 2019, the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), which is run jointly by GIZ and the German Federal Employment Agency, placed 262 integrated experts and 515 returning experts with local employers in our partner countries, or provided them with financial support, advice or other services. *Personnel and business figures as at 31 December 2019*

    Programme

    • The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) initiative supports Sub-Saharan African cities in their fight against climate change and in their efforts to ensure access to clean energy. Under the CoM SSA, local authorities are invited to make a voluntary political commitment to implement climate and energy actions in their communities and agree on a long-term vision to tackle access to energy, climate mitigation and climate adaptation.
    • The support to the CoM SSA initiative in its first phases has been instrumental in setting up a network of over 230 signatory cities and forming a group of early movers. The upcoming support (under CoM SSA Phase III) aims at scaling-up the initiative's impact by enhancing the network of beneficiaries and bridging the gap to finance for local administrations through 3 pillars:
      • Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SEACAP) development, integration and monitoring.
      • Support urban sustainable energy and climate related investments; and
      • Promoting regional cooperation and enhancing learning from good practice.

    Organisational Set-up:

    • The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa is an initiative co-financed by the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID).
    • The support to CoM SSA Phase III is co-implemented by GIZ,Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Expertise France (EF) and AECID.
    • GIZ is supporting the implementation of the CoM SSA Phase III in 4 focal countries (Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nigeria). The main project office is in Brussels, Belgium.

    CoM SSA in Nigeria:

    • The operational objective of GIZ’s CoM SSA Phase III activities in Nigeria is to support SEACAP development, project development, capacity building and supporting climate related investments through:
      • Supporting the process of developing sustainable energy and climate action plans for identified local governments in line with national mandates and CoM SSA guidelines
      • Providing tailored technical assistance to local administrations to develop bankable projects in the areas of climate mitigation, adaptation and energy access
      • Implementing capacity building measures for local administrations through topical workshops, seminars and trainings on project preparation and financing, SEACAP development, etc.
    • In Nigeria, local governments (cities, municipal areas, states) sign up to the CoM SSA. SEACAP development work is currently being implemented by our partner ICLEI Africa for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
    • We are currently identifying relevant urban infrastructure projects in Abuja (Kuje Area Council and AMAC) as well as Lagos State.
    • The Intern, based in Abuja, will support the day-to-day implementation of the CoM SSA activities in Nigeria. The Intern shall operate under the supervision of the Advisor of CoM SSA III in Nigeria, with close coordination with the GIZ Nigeria Energy team and the responsible country manager in the CoM SSA team in Brussels.

    Responsibilities and Tasks
    The Intern will support the implementation of all relevant activities in Nigeria along the 3 pillars of action. The Intern will have the following key responsibilities:

    • Support CoM SSA activities in Nigeria, (including local administration authorities; consultants; local GIZ office; and other relevant partners) in close cooperation with the Project team in Brussels.

    This entails tasks such as:

    • Support all activities agreed between the project and local government officials (as per the agreed work plan);
    • Maintaining appropriate contact and good working relationships in close cooperation with the CoM SSA consultants and all relevant partners in the country;
    • Support field visits to local administrations and projects mainly in Abuja and potentially in Lagos in accordance with the requirements of the project;
    • Support the establishment and logistical preparations of mission programs and organise meetings with partners in the country in close coordination with the consultants and / or country managers of GIZ.
    • Support the identification of data sources, local consultants, potential partners for collaboration, programs or funding options through research and, where possible, through interviews and networking.
    • Support research and information compilation in support of CoM SSA projects activities and results, and knowledge transfer through reports and presentation materials.
    • Support technical trainings for city administrations and local stakeholders to improve their capacities to prepare and implement SEACAPs or infrastructure projects.
    • Support conceptualisation, preparation and implementation of workshops, seminars, conferences or other events on subjects relevant to the CoM SSA activities;

    General Obligations:
    The Intern shall:

    • Represent the interest of CoM SSA and GIZ and always acts on its behalf
    • Carry out important tasks for the Programme, even if these are not explicitly cited in the job description; performs other duties and tasks at the request of the Management

    Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience
    Qualifications:

    • University degree in a relevant field (eg. Urban Planning, Energy, Governance, Economics, Finance, Natural / Environmental Sciences or equivalent).

    Professional Experience:

    • Excellent working knowledge of ICT technologies and computer applications (e.g. MS Office, Excel, Powerpoint)
    • Excellent command of English required
    • Project management skills
    • Ability and willingness to travel.

    Salary
    According to GIZ Nigeria Salary scale for Interns.
