Humanities Teacher (Economics) at Broadoaks British School

JOB PURPOSE

• To deliver high-quality teaching and learning in the humanities, developing students’ knowledge of history and geography, critical thinking, and understanding of past events, while fostering curiosity, engagement, and a lifelong love of learning. The role also involves contributing to curriculum development, mentoring best practices, and supporting the wider academic vision of the school.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

• The Humanities Teacher is responsible for teaching geography/history/economics to students across various age ranges and abilities, promoting subject literacy, analytical skills, and global awareness. The role requires initiative, collaboration, and innovation, with opportunities to contribute to whole-school development and cross-departmental projects.

RELATIONSHIPS

• The Humanities Teacher is selected by the Director of Schools in consultation with the HOS/KSC and HR.
• The teacher will report directly to the KS Coordinator and, in their absence, to the HOS/DHOS. The teacher will also work collaboratively with other subject leaders, SEN staff, colleagues across departments, parents, and external stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and Deliver Engaging Lessons: Design and implement well-structured, engaging, and differentiated lessons that cater to diverse learning needs and abilities.
• Assess and Monitor Student Progress: Regularly evaluate student learning through formative and summative assessments, providing constructive feedback to support academic growth.
• Curriculum Leadership Contribution: Play an active role in reviewing and developing the humanities curriculum, ensuring it reflects the school’s vision, meets examination standards, and integrates innovative practices.
• Mentorship and Collaboration: Share best practices, mentor less experienced colleagues where appropriate, and contribute to cross-departmental and whole-school projects.
• Extracurricular Engagement: Organize and lead humanities clubs, debates, field trips, or enrichment activities that extend learning beyond the classroom.
• Create an Effective Learning Environment: Maintain a safe, inclusive, and stimulating classroom that promotes inquiry, independence, and critical thinking.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and stakeholders to support student success.
• Technology in Teaching: Integrate digital tools to enhance engagement, source analysis, and access to multiple perspectives.
• Professional Development: Engage in ongoing CPD, demonstrating a commitment to continuous growth and readiness for broader responsibilities.
• School Community Participation: Actively contribute to the wider life of the school, supporting initiatives, events, and culture-building activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

• Lesson Effectiveness & Student Engagement: Deliver at least 90% of lessons that are rated engaging and effective.
• Student Progress: Ensure at least 75% of students show measurable academic progress, with 10% exceeding expectations.
• Curriculum & Innovation: Contribute a minimum of two curriculum or teaching innovations annually.
• Extracurricular Involvement: Lead at least three humanities-related enrichment activities per year with 60% student participation.
• Technology Integration: Employ at least three digital or media strategies per term.
• Parent & Stakeholder Communication: Maintain 90% positive feedback from parents through structured termly communication.

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / TRCN.
• Degree in Economics, or a related subject.
• Strong subject knowledge and pedagogical skills.
• Proven ability to inspire and motivate students of different ages and abilities.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in contributing to curriculum development or leading initiatives within a school setting (desirable).
• Familiarity with the British curriculum and assessment frameworks (e.g., IGCSE, A-Level).
