    Generator / Electrician Operator

    Job Purpose

    • To ensure efficient operation, routine maintenance, and safe handling of power generators and electrical systems to guarantee uninterrupted power supply, prevent equipment failure, and maintain full compliance with safety, environmental, and OEM standards.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities
    Generator Operations:

    • Operate diesel and petrol generators in line with approved operating procedures.
    • Start, stop, monitor, and control generators to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply.
    • Maintain proper generator load balance and ensure smooth manual or automatic changeover (ATS).
    • Monitor generator performance parameters and respond promptly to alarms or abnormalities.
    • Maintain accurate daily logs of generator run hours, fuel consumption, and operational status.

    Maintenance and Repairs:

    • Carry out routine servicing of generators, including oil changes, filter replacement, belt inspection, coolant system checks, and load testing.
    • Install, service, and repair Cummins and CAT generators, including engines, alternators, control panels, and auxiliary components.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical faults on generators and associated equipment.
    • Perform basic and intermediate repairs on generators, alternators, switchgear, and control systems.
    • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with OEM standards and service schedules.
    • Liaise with external technicians or OEM representatives for major repairs, overhauls, or warranty-related issues.

    Electrical Works:

    • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, sockets, switches, lighting systems, and distribution panels.
    • Inspect electrical systems to detect faults, short circuits, overloads, or safety hazards.
    • Ensure proper earthing, grounding, surge protection, and electrical safety compliance.
    • Support electrical works during new installations, generator upgrades, or facility expansions.

    Control Systems and ATS:

    • Calibrate, configure, and repair generator control systems and Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).
    • Ensure seamless synchronization between mains power and generator supply.
    • Test and verify control panel functionality after maintenance or repairs.

    Safety, Environmental and Compliance:

    • Adhere strictly to electrical, mechanical, and generator safety procedures.
    • Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of diesel/petrol, lubricants, batteries, and spare parts.
    • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
    • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
    • Report safety hazards, equipment defects, near misses, or incidents promptly.

    Reporting and Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate records of generator maintenance activities, service schedules, parts used, and repair history.
    • Submit regular reports on generator performance, faults, downtime, and repairs.
    • Report major defects, potential hazards, and recommend corrective actions to supervisors.
    • Support internal and external audits and inspections relating to power and electrical systems.

    Technical Support and Continuous Improvement:

    • Provide on-site technical support to clients or internal users when required.
    • Keep abreast of the latest OEM technical updates, modifications, service bulletins, and best practices.
    • Recommend improvements to enhance generator reliability, efficiency, and lifespan.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • Minimum of Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or equivalent.
    • Trade Test Certificate, Technical College Certificate, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering / Power Systems is an added advantage.
    • 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a Generator Operator / Electrician.
    • Proven experience working on Cummins and CAT generators is a strong advantage.
    • Strong knowledge of diesel generators, electrical systems, ATS, and control panels.
    • Ability to read and interpret basic electrical diagrams, manuals, and OEM documentation.

    Skills and Competencies:

    • Generator troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.
    • Electrical installation, testing, and maintenance.
    • Preventive maintenance planning and execution.
    • OEM compliance and technical discipline.
    • Strong safety consciousness and attention to detail.
    • Record keeping, reporting, and documentation.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
