    Finance Associate

    Overall Responsibilities

    • The Finance Associate will support the Finance Officer with safeguarding the assets (financial and physical) of Helen Keller and ultimately the donor against fraud, loss, or misuse.
    • The Finance Associate works closely with other Finance Team to ensure that any money expended in the field is done in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Helen Keller policy, and any cost principles imposed by the donor agency. The Finance Associate is aware of, and adheres to, Helen Keller’s financial integrity standards in all activities.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Supports the Finance to provide financial oversight of all financial operations and practices in the country office and field offices.
    • Ensure compliance with all local laws relating to accounting and finance;
    • Ensure accounting and operating information is complete and reliable
    • In collaboration with the other Finance Team, provide training and support to State Finance Staff on financial policies, procedures, and practices.
    • Ensure timely and accurate submission of required financial management reports and other related information fas required.
    • Provide support for the annual, mid-year and proposal budget.
    • Participates in the preparation of various financial statements, forecast and reports.
    • Properly code all transactions.
    • Reconcile advances, including review of receipts, coding of expenses on the general voucher and entering into Netsuite.
    • Participate in the improvement of the accounting system and the system of internal control.
    • Create all financial reports as requested by supervisor.
    • Preparation of forms for payments of taxes and social security.
    • Manage travel advances to staff, assuring proper documentation and timely clearing of all advances. Ensure that payments are processed accurately, timely, and safely (to minimize Helen Keller’s risk exposure).
    • Ensure that treasury practices in country minimize Helen Keller’s cash exposure.
    • Create journal entries, assuring all entries are properly coded, charged to the proper account codes.
    • Ensure that all costs have adequate prior authorization and approval.
    • Prepare all other financial reports as needed;

    Requirements

    • Degree in a Finance related field (such as Finance & Accounting, Business Management or Business Administration) and advanced university degree is desirable
    • A professional accounting qualification (such as ACA, CPA, ACCA) is an added advantage
    • A minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in a similar position, preferably with an international development organization.
    • Strong analytical, problem solving and financial modelling skills.
    • Good knowledge of MS Office (particularly advanced Excel skills).
    • Strong working knowledge of accounting programmes.
    • Experience in ensuring effective financial management, systems and controls, including institutional grant management, particularly with an international organization.
    • An effective team player who is able to work diplomatically and with sensitivity with individuals from variety of cultures, professional and personal backgrounds.
    • Experience working with non-profit program management, auditing, budgeting and accounting.
    • Knowledge of grants administration, and ability to interpret grants-related governmental documents and accurately respond to them.
    • Strong negotiation, interpersonal and organization skills.
    • Solid understanding of project cycle management.
    • Intercultural knowledge and sensitivity.
    • Proven ability to perform in a multicultural working environment.
    • Team player and good communicator with a proven ability to motivate people.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Willingness to commit and adhere to Helen Keller’s values and mandates.
