    Environmental Officer

    Job Summary

    Responsible for implementation of environmental programs which include Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) operation, waste management programs, cleaning, sanitation, and pest control.

    You will be accountable for

    • ETP Operations
    • Carryout required treatments according to regulatory standards to ensure zero regulatory noncompliance due to effluent discharge.
    • Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal State and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process, and storm water and sludge management.
    • Control equipment and monitor processes that remove or destroy harmful materials, chemicals, and microorganisms from wastewater.
    • Run tests to make sure that the processes are working correctly.
    • Keep records of wastewater (influent and treated effluent) quality and other indicators.
    • Operate and maintain the pumps and motors that move water and wastewater through filtration systems.
    • Fix chemical leaks and oxygen deficiencies.
    • Assist in the performance of regular and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and machinery.
    • On call to respond to emergencies and breakdowns at the plant and pump stations.
    • Conduct the necessary weekend checks of the treatment plant on a rotating basis.
    • Carryout root cause analysis for all Out of Specification trends.
    • Maintain open communications with the Engineering Service Manager and the Factory HSE Manager regarding the treatment process and pump stations operation and malfunctions, as well as make recommendations for repairs and improvements to these systems.

    Cleaning, Sanitation & Pest Control

    • Ensures that the daily pest Management surveillance is maintained by the consultant and fumigation is carried out by the service provider as at when due and records properly kept.
    • Coordinate and supervise daily cleaning activity of the factory and its environs.
    • Share reports on daily cleaning performance with the Factory HSE Manager.
    • Assist in waste management programme and activities in line with the set business processes.
    • Follow up with all periodic environmental consultant samplings and analysis.

    Other HSE Duties

    • Perform all work in conformance to Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of a workable HSE Management System (HSE-MS)
    • Participate in HSE inspections and audit of project sites and facilities
    • Participate in accident investigation and reporting.
    • Ensure health and safety systems, policies, procedures, and programs used to manage jobs are understood and are utilized by company and contract personnel
    • Participate in the delivery of health safety and environment training programs.
    • Conduct and participate in review, inspections and audits of contractors, their equipment, and programs to ensure compliance with company and Regulatory requirements, as requested.
    • Provide effective health and safety communication throughout all levels of the workforce
    • Carry out daily environmental/hygiene and safety audit and generate report which has to be followed up to ensure all observations and non-compliances are closed.
    • Carry out daily risk assessment of the site and ensure all observations and non-compliances are duly communicated to the Health Safety & Environment Manager, and followed up to ensure closure
    • Participate in the training and induction of visitors, contractors, employees- both old and new. 
    • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Health Safety and Environment Manager.

    Requirements

    The ideal candidate will possess

    • A minimum of OND in an Engineering or Science related course
    • 3 years’ experience in a Manufacturing Industry on similar role
    •  Able to work effectively with little or no supervision
    • High interpersonal communication skills
    • Possess Engineering knowledge and technical skills
    • Student membership of an engineering institute or other relevant professional body
