    Job Summary

    The Depot Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring safe operations within the ship depot, including docks, yards, workshops, and storage areas. The role focuses on enforcing maritime Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards to prevent accidents, protect personnel, vessels, cargo, and the marine environment, and ensure compliance with maritime regulations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Implement and enforce HSE policies and procedures within the ship depot
    • Conduct regular safety inspections of docks, berths, yards, warehouses, and workshops
    • Identify hazards related to vessel movement, mooring operations, cargo handling, cranes, and lifting equipment
    • Monitor safe loading and unloading operations and compliance with permit-to-work systems
    • Ensure proper use of PPE by depot staff, crew members, contractors, and visitors
    • Oversee safety during fueling, bunkering, and handling of hazardous materials
    • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses; prepare reports and corrective actions
    • Deliver safety inductions and toolbox talks for depot staff and contractors
    • Ensure emergency response plans, fire-fighting equipment, spill kits, and evacuation procedures are in place
    • Monitor environmental protection measures, including spill prevention and waste management
    • Liaise with port authorities, vessel operators, and regulatory bodies on safety matters
    • Maintain accurate HSE records, inspections, and compliance documentation

    Qualifications

    • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Marine Engineering, Nautical Studies, or related field
    • Recognized HSE certification (NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH, or equivalent) preferred
    • Knowledge of maritime safety regulations (e.g., port authority rules, ISM Code) is an advantage

    Experience

    • 2-5 years of experience in a ship depot, port, shipyard, or maritime operations environment
    • Experience with marine safety inspections, cargo operations, or shipyard activities preferred

    Skills and Competencies

    • Strong understanding of maritime HSE standards and depot operations
    • Good communication and safety training skills
    • Strong observation and risk assessment abilities
    • Incident investigation and report-writing skills
    • Ability to work under operational and environmental pressures

    Work Environment

    • Ship depot and port-based with outdoor and waterside operations
    • Exposure to vessels, heavy equipment, lifting operations, and varying weather conditions
