    AMR Surveillance Advisor

    About the role:

    The AMR Surveillance Advisor will be responsible for supporting the development, integration, and implementation of strategies and systems relevant to the national and subnational AMR, AMS, AMU, and AMC actions, approaches, and strategies, and the overall data management for antimicrobial resistance across levels. The Advisor will develop and conduct interventions with a primary focus on optimizing, monitoring, acquiring, collating, and analyzing AMR data, systems, and tools, and integrating them into the available systems across levels.  The AMR Surveillance Advisor will work closely with the digital technology specialist, AMU/AMC Advisor, and Monitoring and Evaluation team to leverage Flemming Fund resources to enhance AMR data management. S/he will be expected to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results in applying systems thinking and relevant solutions to AMR data-related interventions. The role will ensure that AMR surveillance solutions and systems are developed, and innovations integrated into the national AMR surveillance system are built. S/He will provide technical assistance to AMRCC leaders, partners, health facilities, and other stakeholders on the conduct of AMR surveillance interventions; s/he will work for improvements and broad collaboration across stakeholders, organizations, agencies, and other entities working in this area.\

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide strategic and technical direction for AMR surveillance interventions and streamline existing AMR surveillance efforts in the country, providing guidance regarding efficiencies and best practices, adapted to the local country context.
    • Develop and implement strategies to optimize AMR surveillance.
    • Conduct assessments, analyses, reviews, and audits to assess ways to continually adapt AMR surveillance strategies to address constraints and barriers and improve the AMR situation in the country.
    • Collaborate with the AMRCC healthcare providers and other relevant stakeholders to support AMR surveillance actions. Provide education and training on AMR surveillance practices and principles for select healthcare system staff and stakeholders.

    This list is not exhaustive, the AMR Surveillance Advisor will be expected to carry out other duties as assigned to achieve the outcomes desired by our client and needed by the people the project aims to serve.

    Specific requirements for this role would be:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in medicine, pharmacy, or health-related area with a master’s degree in public health or epidemiology.

    Experience:

    • Minimum of six years’ experience in using biostatistical and epidemiological methods to manage and conduct epidemiological and/or social scientific research and/or surveillance.
    • Relevant experience in AMR program implementation including NAP AMR development and implementation; Global health security programs and surveillance.
    • Knowledge and experience of disease surveillance and other relevant health programs
    • Knowledge of antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial use, antimicrobial stewardship mechanisms, and epidemiology
    • Experience with AMR surveillance, WHONET, AMRIS, Electronic Laboratory systems, and electronic medical information systems will be an added advantage.
    • Computer proficiency in word processing, databases, and spreadsheets, with advanced skills in at least two of the following programs: GIS, SPSS, Epi Info, Stata, SAS, MS Excel, and MS Access.​

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Strong negotiation, coordination, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
    • Must understand the need for sensitivity to cultural differences and ethical issues surrounding research and surveillance.
    • Must be available and to travel on demand.
